Not in Front of the Children

The outbreak of internecine warfare at RIFC is being acted out through a real pea-soup fog right now. The war is being fought on so many fronts that it is difficult to see just exactly how many armies are involved, and how the alliances are shaping up.

Craig Mather would appear to be in the Charles Green camp, but it is difficult to imagine that he would be happy to hear old blunderbuss-mouth peppering Ally McCoist with shot. McCoist’s in-character but inelegant riposte, whilst a valiant attempt at deflection and self-preservation, put his mentor and chairman, Walter Smith in a rather awkward position. It gives Mather a double headache as he tries to head off Clyde Blowers boss Jim McColl – and his blowhard ally Paul Murray – at the EGM-pass.

If Mather stands by Green, and Smith does the same for McCoist, then the two main officers of the company will be in opposite, and hostile, camps.

As I say, making sense of it is difficult, but one thing is as clear as an empty window frame: the acrimony, which has been in existence for months, is only now being aired in public because the season ticket drive is over. The one policy that the warring factions have been in agreement with is “Not in Front of the Children”.

Now that the fans have been compelled to buy season tickets in substantial numbers through a mixture of fear, loyalty and a never-ending stream of press spin telling them that “Rangers are on the cusp of greatness if only the supporters cough up”, it seems acceptable that the real war can begin – but what is the prize?

There can be little doubt that all of the factions are aware that a conservative business model is necessary if Rangers are to establish themselves in Scottish football – certainly a more conservative one than that followed by RFC (IL). I infer therefore that the war is not over a Murray vs McCann approach. My best guess is that the war is one of ideals – between one faction which aims to make as much money in the short term as possible, and another which, whilst not averse to a bit of nest-feathering, sees the health of the club and the notion of a continuity Rangers as paramount.

The trouble for Rangers fans is that it is the former faction which holds all the cards – all the shares in fact. I think that all fans of the game of football would hope that people with football at heart would win out here, irrespective of what their partisan loyalties dictate on a day to day basis.

The problem for either warring faction is that the loyalty of the Rangers fans is finite. The “long road (back)” to the top is one which might engage them for while. It is a great journey which is not without its rewards and adventure, but expectations will be massive if and when they get to the top league. When the acceleration of progress meets the buffers of premier championship aspiration, gate money will be in the front passenger seat.  Managing unrealistic expectations is extremely difficult, and evidenced by the use of McCoist’s recruitment sledgehammer to crack the nut of the bottom two divisions.

But here are some questions to which I honestly do not know the answer;

  • How does the Rangersness faction wrest control away from these spivs?
  • How will the spivs attempt to ensure that the Rangersness faction fails in their objective?
  • Can the people in the Rangersness camp REALLY be trusted to act in the best interests of the club even if it is at odds with their own? This, given the close association with the terminal decline of the club they all profess to love.
  • Is there any realistic scenario which allows this club to prosper and challenge for honours within a ten to fifteen year period?

My belief is that the key to the new club being able to establish itself is managing the expectations of the fans. Despite the MSM willingness to cut and paste RFC and RIFC press releases unadulterated, the ability of that same MSM to impress a message of realism into Rangers fans is zero. Not in front of the children in fact.

Is it really a sociological bridge too far to expect Rangers fans to turn down the expectation-ometer? I don’t believe it is. In the eighties, if I recall correctly, a seriously underachieving Rangers team were not met with demands for big spending. There was pressure on them to get better managers who could pick better players, but no demands for Fort Knox to be breached.  If Rangers fans really want a club called Rangers playing in blue at Ibrox, and competing fully in the game, they need to find leaders who can sell the long-termism of such an aspiration. Many will hope, including the spivs and the MSM, that no such leader emerges.

Just finished watching it myself, I was on the phone to an ole pal and he told me he was watching it on BBC Alba so I finished the phone call. Couple of good goals

  4. I was just thinking watching the Thistle v Hearts game that I wanted Hearts to win in order that the bottom end of league becomes competitive. That got me thinking (tin hat moment) if Celtic or any team were to win the top league in any given season by a large margin should they have a 6 point penalty at the start of the season. That would buck up Celtic that’s for sure if people thought they were complacent and life was to easy. I know I know it will never happen nor never work., just stupid 😆

  6. I must say as an avid believer in it all being a Minty ploy to get rid of Hector and the sold off revenue streams ,I am struggling to equate were the bus boys come into the plan .
I am sure I must have missed a twist and a turn along the way but the thought of the bus boys being at the forefront of the tribute act did not really occur to me .
Has the master plan went for a Burton or have I been wrong all this time
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 😳 😳

  7. Saw BFDJ latest diatribe in the ET .
All I can say is that it more than justifies the need for forums like this .
This idiot is given a platform in the SMSM to push the clubs (which ever one it happens to be at that moment) agenda and gets paid to do so .
Funny that he finds it a problem that the club is a PLC company at the moment ,yet he has been spouting garbage about the last (dead) club being nothing of the kind .
A message to Derek if you are going to be a liar ,you had better have a good memory .

  12. I see the Next Gen series has been cancelled due to lack of funds amongst the teams involved.
How long before the MSM link this to ‘The Rangers’ not being in the top division.

Now as things go down Govan way it has been a relatively quiet week. Someone must have gagged dear old Chas. The major stories seem to be shares transactions, the EGM or lack of one, and the SFA who seem to be getting dragged back into the circus ring. Oh and poor old Campbell gives an interview in which he reveals how bad an administrator, or memory, he actually has giving his critics even more ammunition to call for his head. He really is a shambolic President.

Rumours abound that one of the architects of the infamous ‘five way agreement’ is in with a chance of a new job at Ibrox where he will join the Wifi enabled Chief of Communications, and former cheerleader, Jim Traynor. How long before Campbell joins the throng at the top of the marble staircase?

Perhaps the plan is to have so many people with such large egos atop the marble staircase that ‘The Big Hoose’ will collapse in on itself causing the whole problem to disappear.
    We can but hope!

  15. Drew, Tall Poppy, Eco……..

Funnily enough, Minty bought into Alexander Dennis about nine years back when they were coming out of Administration. He was their main Aluminium supplier and probably still is. Brian Souter the Stagecoach supremo also bought into the new Company. Both had a vested interest.

You know what – that is a perfectly ridiculous – and sadly, a perfectly believable suggestion.

If he ever gets turfed out – or perhaps more likely when he decides that there is too much negative info available about him and he decides to jump before being pushed – I could certainly see Ogilvie return to the Govan club as e.g. honourary Chairman / President.

    And to repeat a sooperb point raised by another Bampot here, [sorry can’t remember who] ;
By dint of his association with HMFC we have an SFA President who himself would be unable to pass an SFA ‘fit & proper person test’ as a prospective football club director.

    Ogilvie has no shame.

  18. Maybe had a glass of wine too many but here is what I like about football and Scottish football.
    Terry Butcher!!
One of the first big name big money signings of the SDM and Souness era and part of what we all know now was probably the downfall of the game in Scotland. However he is a guy who now has Scottish Football in his blood. Clearly loving his time at Inverness and appears to be liked up there for what he has achieved.
However when asked about the friendly on Wednesday and then acting as a pundit on the STV coverage there was no doubting he was as English as John Bull himself.
Slightly political but in my view he came across as a confident (but not arrogant) Englishman, proud to be unashamidly English and not afraid to say so and I respect him for being open, honest and not giving some Hansonesque soppy answer to win favour with his hosts. That being said and I may be wrong but with a bit of arm twisting he could be persuaded to vote yes in 2014 🙂

    1) The guy is a complete fraud. In Speirs puff piece the other day, he claimed that in the 27 (that’s right, twenty seven) years at Ibrox he wasn’t involved in the day to day detail. Yet here’s the DR article from 2005 in which he flatly contradicts his most recent assertion.

    2) “… the environs of her ample coupon burnished with a couple of bawbees bought with money on which no tax had been paid?…”

    3) “Speirs and Jackson, the tools not to trust”
    ==========================================================================
Slim…you really have excelled yourself…!…but taking the main points in turn:

    1) This comment comes from a “world class administrator”, whom, if I recall correctly, as Company Secretary of a PLC has signed off the company’s audited accounts for a goodly number of years, including those outlined in his “memoirs”…or lack thereof…!
I do firmly beleive that this despicable apology for his gross deriliction of duty has been highlighted before on here and on RTC.
    2) Pure dead brilliant…! I am sure I would recognise here down here, even in Essex!
    3) I do sadly recall the jingle and “strapline” to this advertisement…and still use the “product”.

  21. EBC
when ever the phrase the great administrator is used to describe CO .I am afraid it reminds me of the great dictator ,the Mel Brookes version of course .
When you think back to this whole charade began how many Ragers men roamed the corridors of power at Hampden ,in the lead up to the death of the old club and the emergence of the tribute act .
In the fullness of time someone will sit back and piece together a timeline on all the peepil involved and the outcome will leave even the most sceptical doubter shaking their heads as to how it was all allowed .

Posters who have posted on the site in the last six months c. 1200 (total since site started: 1600)

I wouldn’t make the claim that this tells a story of huge success or a mainstream breakthrough, but definitely not just a few guys talking to themselves.

When new and interesting stuff comes on the site, like during the reconstruction debate and the various crises at Ibrox, a relatively fewer quota of posters is accompanied by ridiculous peaks in views. Giving rise to the notion that people (in huge numbers) will come along to hear the interpretation of big news when it breaks elsewhere.

  33. Just catching up with the last 24 hours. The name of Mr Campbell Ogilvie has been mentioned in many posts !

Am I right in saying the same Mr Ogilvie is the current presiding member who currently holds the post of “President of the Scottish Football Association” ?

My God, That’s an important position to hold ! What a responsabilty ! “President” of all Scottish Football !

Does anyone out there know what this “President” does ? I don’t!

My point is that if Mr Ogilvie had been a long servant of his beloved RFC, and stuck through it thick and thin, his comments might have had some merit.

However, he didn’t. Like some sort of Chameleon, he has managed to shift-shape his way to the top echelon of “Our” National game via Hearts (Strange how they are going down the same road !).

“Our” SFA President is pivotal to what is happening to “Our” National Game.

I would love to see Mr Reagan knock on his “President’s” door somewhere in Hampden and say” Hi Campbell, We’ve gave it a good go. It’s maybe time you retired so we can clean this mess up. It’s quite difficult whilst you’re still here. Don’t worry, We’ll give you a good payout to repay your EBT”

Seriously Folks, this guy we affectionally call “CO” has been under the radar for years. He is seriously compromised in this whole scandal, yet still holds the position of “President of the Scottish Football Association” ! Just about sums it up for me !

If the guy had any Baws, he would have walked from this Saga 2 years ago, Even more worrying, why hasn’t Mr Regean been knocking on his door asking him to retire ?

More disturbingly, why is Mr Ogilvie never seen on TV ? I couldn’t even tell you what he looks like ! Closest I got was when Tommy caught him in a phone call. He came across as a guy who didn’t care / or didn’t give a hoot what people thought.

Why is “CO” allowed so much leeway ? One of life’s great mystery’s I suppose ?

Scottish Football needs a good “Cleansing” from Top to bottom. Messr’s Doncaster & Longmuir are not qualified to to it, as they are only interested in profit.

However, Mr Reagan is the guy in charge at the moment of “Scottish Football”. He’s been very quiet as well !!!!!!!!!

    What a mess ?

Just to go off topic for a minute, I just posted this on my blog, re: the tv deals in South East Asia.
    http://saintinasia.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/epl-southeast-asia-tv-blackout-wheres-the-spfl/

Many of you probably realise that the English leagues have sold their rights for an astronomical 5.5 Billion this season, much of it coming from overseas. However, one major issue is that the ‘buyers’ haven’t managed to sell their rights on to the local stations.

In South East Asia we have had StarSports (part of ESPN – now FoxSports) air the football for the past 5 years. This year the football will be on a channel called beIN Sports. The problem is beIN sports isn’t broadcast in any of the following: Taiwan, HK, Vietnam, Cambodia, China or Philippines. Indonesia have the channel available only in Jakarta and Thailand have the channel but dont have enough new boxes to go around!
    =======================================

    Steph/Saintinaisia

A wee tale caution when selling footie to Taiwanese. I think I gave this an airing on RTC many moons ago.

When setting up a new outfit in deepest Lanarkshire we started off sharing offices with Dr John, lawyer then a Celtic shareholder and heid of LDC.

Said Taiwanese were firstly taken to a Celtic game. Given the full treatment.

I was the (sort of) minder to these managers). I had no interest in the game and they returned to work on Monday actually horrified. Celtic strips at the factory would be banned. (What my boss actually said was Ianagain place very dangerous -aye ok) that was construed by a Scots manager to mean they felt threatened.

When word of this got round some yahoo from a supplier thought the remedy would be (obviously) to take them to Ibrox. Again they returned on Monday (this time very very noisy). So no Gers strips.

Final pre season friendly(commercial dude at the well thinks its my day) its the Well v Bradford pre match meal vino lovely. Of course I go.

Imagine my embarrassment as in post prandial bliss my top dudes snore all the way through the first half in front of the whole centre stand. (After game comments “very peaceful place Ian again we must go again”)

    Hooray well tops allowed!

  36. Oh must say they never did return to any footie. Taiwanese/Japanese consider the working day to end about 1800 Saturday in my experience. So sunday game may be of interest.

  37. Been a lurker since the first week of RTC, re the tv rights, here in Phoenix I subscribe to Fox Sports and with that I get to watch the English Premier league (Sky) Scottish football is shown on another channel Fox Soccer Plus but this is not included in the Fox sports package, it costs another 10 dollars to get that channel, I asked about just getting soccer plus but was told I could only get it if I had Fox Sports, so England get billions and Scotland get peanuts yet Sky charge more for Scottish football.

Interesting exchange Exiled. After reading the Savage piece online (about his list of dirty tricks for players seeking transfers) I could see Tom’s point, Savage is just using a bit of whataboutery to deflect. For all we know Savage still uses his tricks to boost his media image ‘because he’s worth it’. Perhaps he hopes to get bigger bucks at Sky or BT Sport? Savage presenting 606 is like Billy Dodds presenting This Week in Parliament. If I had to choose between the two, I’d take Billy Dodds summarising PMQs every time to Savage talking about himself 🙂

  39. Morning,

There was a lot of chatter on twitter last night – cryptic clues about something big about to drop. Many of the tweets were cryptic – jungle drums beating. Some were more direct albeit with gaps in the information e.g. news will come out cannot confirm when.

I noticed the following tweet this morning:

    SHAKHTAIL PROPAGANDY ‏@Propa_Gander 7h
Lots of jungle drums beating about the ‘deeds’

Top of the agenda at GM? Is it minutes of the meeting? No, agenda was right first time :^D

    SHAKHTAIL PROPAGANDY ‏@Propa_Gander 7h
Craig Whyte has the deeds, Na Na Na NaNa. Singing, Craig Whyte has the deeds, Na NaNaNaNaNa

    #Secvo
    #EmergencyGeneralMeeting :^P

The plot thickens, the rollercoaster ride continues.

Anyone listening to Savage for his insight and words of wisdom will be severely disappointed. His footballing worldview seems to consist of a combination of having nothing worth saying about the game, coupled with the occasional attempt to say something controversial about how in the ‘real world’ of football, you have to sometimes get nasty with a ‘reducer’ tackle, or in the current case, by manufacturing a bust up with a club you want to leave. The sum total is nothing we don’t already know, the insight into the beautiful game of a pub team clogger.

Didn’t our Mr Stockbridge produce the deeds for one his favourite tabloids recently? How many sets of deeds are there?

Great twitter name that SHAKHTAIL PROPAGANDY btw 🙂

  42. Robbie Savage is one of those untalented ‘celebrities’ who manage to increase their TVness by appearing in some sad reality show (don’t remember which one, and don’t care). He ‘enhances’ this by styling himself on Barry Gibb, circa 1986. I am sure he has brought a ‘new audience’ to the sports programmes he appears in with very few/none in the least bit football savvy. He is a fine example of the ‘dumbing down’ of British television. He might be correct in criticising Tom English, but he is now in the same sphere of the media, so why doesn’t he show the b*lls to report the truth to an English audience of the corruption in Scottish football? Oh I know, that would actually mean doing a bit more than lounging on a sofa spouting what’s basically football gossip.

Hope Tom does call him up on 606 though. Quite a duel it could be, Robbie with his perfumed manbag and Tom counter-swiping with a rolled-up version of The Scotsman 😀

  44. While I continue to enjoy Paul McConville’s very insightful blogs I’ve become bored with the comments from a large proportion of the posters finding it full of petty name calling and insults which take the discussion/blog topics no further on. As a result I seldom spend time reading them, which is a shame because there are still some very good posters there. I’ve just had a quick look, having read Paul’s latest blogs last night, and lo and behold, the first post I read is by none other than Steerpike! Though which Steerpike it’s hard to tell, for far from the writing style of ‘intelligent but repetitive troll’ (not that I believe him to be all that intelligent and definitely no accountant) he uses here he has entered into childish argument mode which supports the assertion he is more than one person. It looks to me like he/they have decided he/they either can’t disrupt us to the extent they want or have got a cyber bloody nose once too often, so have moved on to another blog to disrupt. I wonder what his/their new incarnation will be on here and what persona they will supply themselves with.

Thanks for that. I now have an image of Matt Damon as Scott Thorson (Liberace’s plaything) in full-on unarmed combat (strictly pirouettes and close quarter tango) with Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. Bourne is holding is own. Thorson isn’t! 😯

  46. Rangers to buy more players, says McCoist

Ally McCoist says he plans to keep up his Ibrox spending spree, in spite of the fact that Rangers have spent the full £22 million raised in an earlier share issue.

The Rangers manager said he would continue to bring in new faces to the side “until told otherwise”.

He said: “I’m no different from any other manager. If you have a budget to work with you are told you can’t do this but we’ll allow you to do that.

“Remember, we’re bringing in free transfers. We’re not spending money on signing targets because of the embargo but we believe we’re bringing in quality.” (Herald)

The DR could have saved a few trees and just printed ‘Ally McCoist confirms his head is still in the sand’. What a waste of space that article was, or was it? It’s a very clear indication that very highly paid people at Ibrox, accepted as being full of Rangersness, just don’t give a damn about their club, but do care about their own image. I wonder how many bears will read this article and worry; and how many will say, ‘ see, there’s nothing wrong at Rangers, Ally just told us so’, even though he didn’t.

  48. Should have added, Ally McCoist continues to get his excuses for failure in early, because if he doesn’t get the players he wants, then it’s not his fault, is it?

  49. Good Morning,
Like many on here I would not buy the red top rags.
I do have a sneak at the Daily Liar on line.
McCoist’s alleged statement today is absolutely incredulous.
Ally do you not know that you cannot spend money you don’t have?
If you spend someone else’s money it is usually called debt.
Was debt not how Rangers first died.
I wonder which creditor is going to get stiffed in pursuit of this insane policy.
I sincerely hope that Hector’s collectors are on top of this mob. It would not go down well if they were allowed to run up a debt by non payment of VAT and PAYE like their previous club.
Maybe it’s just the gullible fans who will be parted from their cash, but then they never listened in the first place.
It is a long time since I did any conveyancing but perhaps some legal could confirm whether or not it is possible for a Title to be in someone’s possession but remain unrecorded until it suits them to present it to the Registrar. Equally is it possible that even if CW is not sitting on the Deed that he has a set of Missives (an offer and acceptance of that offer) which give him the right to Title.
Someone must know what aces CW has up his sleeve.

Thanks for the links you posted about the bus manufacturer and the fact that McGills have bought 20 new coaches from them. There may be something to ponder re DM’s link to the bus manufacturer and the fact that McGills is a customer but I don’t actually find that surprising and in itself might not mean anything.

But I’m afraid the links don’t answer my basic question and that is where has the story come from that the Easdales are selling McGills. It seems to me more and more that it is wishful thinking dreamt-up by a poster or some kind of PR deflection.

I wonder why Grossart was on “the Iraq-Syrian border looking at Crusader castles”? 👿
