Not in Front of the Children

The outbreak of internecine warfare at RIFC is being acted out through a real pea-soup fog right now. The war is being fought on so many fronts that it is difficult to see just exactly how many armies are involved, and how the alliances are shaping up.

Craig Mather would appear to be in the Charles Green camp, but it is difficult to imagine that he would be happy to hear old blunderbuss-mouth peppering Ally McCoist with shot. McCoist’s in-character but inelegant riposte, whilst a valiant attempt at deflection and self-preservation, put his mentor and chairman, Walter Smith in a rather awkward position. It gives Mather a double headache as he tries to head off Clyde Blowers boss Jim McColl – and his blowhard ally Paul Murray – at the EGM-pass.

If Mather stands by Green, and Smith does the same for McCoist, then the two main officers of the company will be in opposite, and hostile, camps.

As I say, making sense of it is difficult, but one thing is as clear as an empty window frame: the acrimony, which has been in existence for months, is only now being aired in public because the season ticket drive is over. The one policy that the warring factions have been in agreement with is “Not in Front of the Children”.

Now that the fans have been compelled to buy season tickets in substantial numbers through a mixture of fear, loyalty and a never-ending stream of press spin telling them that “Rangers are on the cusp of greatness if only the supporters cough up”, it seems acceptable that the real war can begin – but what is the prize?

There can be little doubt that all of the factions are aware that a conservative business model is necessary if Rangers are to establish themselves in Scottish football – certainly a more conservative one than that followed by RFC (IL). I infer therefore that the war is not over a Murray vs McCann approach. My best guess is that the war is one of ideals – between one faction which aims to make as much money in the short term as possible, and another which, whilst not averse to a bit of nest-feathering, sees the health of the club and the notion of a continuity Rangers as paramount.

The trouble for Rangers fans is that it is the former faction which holds all the cards – all the shares in fact. I think that all fans of the game of football would hope that people with football at heart would win out here, irrespective of what their partisan loyalties dictate on a day to day basis.

The problem for either warring faction is that the loyalty of the Rangers fans is finite. The “long road (back)” to the top is one which might engage them for while. It is a great journey which is not without its rewards and adventure, but expectations will be massive if and when they get to the top league. When the acceleration of progress meets the buffers of premier championship aspiration, gate money will be in the front passenger seat.  Managing unrealistic expectations is extremely difficult, and evidenced by the use of McCoist’s recruitment sledgehammer to crack the nut of the bottom two divisions.

But here are some questions to which I honestly do not know the answer;

  • How does the Rangersness faction wrest control away from these spivs?
  • How will the spivs attempt to ensure that the Rangersness faction fails in their objective?
  • Can the people in the Rangersness camp REALLY be trusted to act in the best interests of the club even if it is at odds with their own? This, given the close association with the terminal decline of the club they all profess to love.
  • Is there any realistic scenario which allows this club to prosper and challenge for honours within a ten to fifteen year period?

My belief is that the key to the new club being able to establish itself is managing the expectations of the fans. Despite the MSM willingness to cut and paste RFC and RIFC press releases unadulterated, the ability of that same MSM to impress a message of realism into Rangers fans is zero. Not in front of the children in fact.

Is it really a sociological bridge too far to expect Rangers fans to turn down the expectation-ometer? I don’t believe it is. In the eighties, if I recall correctly, a seriously underachieving Rangers team were not met with demands for big spending. There was pressure on them to get better managers who could pick better players, but no demands for Fort Knox to be breached.  If Rangers fans really want a club called Rangers playing in blue at Ibrox, and competing fully in the game, they need to find leaders who can sell the long-termism of such an aspiration. Many will hope, including the spivs and the MSM, that no such leader emerges.

😆 I very much doubt it, but it’s worth a try,( ginger nuts and green penguins) 😛

  2. If Mr McColl is so confident of a majority of votes at a EGM, Why did WS leave voluntarily and why are the bears being prodded to action at every oppurtunity by the real rangers men through their brothers in the MSM.

This is what I’m wondering. Traynor seemed to be saying this too: sell up or you’ll be ousted anyway. Is it all just bluster/intimidation? Green doesn’t seem the type to be scared off: witness him turning up at Ibrox the other night as bold as brass.

  3. Sorry I haven’t been able to post for a while. However I have been reading with great interest.

A question for Steerpike, by his own admission an accountant and business expert.

The interim accounts to 31/12/2012 show operating costs running at £2.4m per month, let’s say £28m per annum. Is that agreed? Now what evidence is there that this figure has significantly reduced since 31/12? Everybody who has gone seems to be replaced by other people on similar wages. Traynor has arrived since then, on a big wedge. The other running costs don’t seem to have reduced- how can they? You’re talking about running Ibrox and a world class training facility. That doesn’t come cheap. Yet you seem sure that costs have been brought under control. What leads you to believe that?

I have published my own cash flow projection several times now. Auldheid has a much more sophisticated version, which he has linked to several times. On my “model” (that’s a fancy word for the back of a fag packet), the IPO money has basically now been spent on operating costs. Even excluding the legal costs of the last few months, which must surely have been significant.

The ST renewals have brought in £8m max (although a lot will be by instalments, I guess, and not in yet). That is just over 3 months operating costs. I think your answer is to “big up” non ticket sales, i.e sponsorship etc. Your (in my opinion highly optimistic) figure is £9m. That’s another 4 months operating costs. That gets TRFC through to the end of February. Matchday recepits might bring in another £400k per month. So on my figures for operating costs and cash on hand at 31/12/2012 (actually RIFC’s own figures) and your own highly optimistic figures for non ticket income, TRFC are bust by April.

Mind you, in my opinion, they are bust now, which is why all the recent action. It is now time for those behind RIFC to separate assets from liabilities. Ibrox and Murray Park are assets. They will be sold or kept, whatever. TRFC is the liability, and an ongoing, never ending money pit. If the real players manage to get rid of it for some actual real money, then either they are really clever, or the people buying it are really stupid- probably both.

  5. After CGs recent STV interview, I received the following article from the Harvard Business School with almost serendipitous timing. “How to Spot a Liar by Carmen Noble”. The article is attached, but the findings that seemed vaguely familiar somehow were:

On average, liars used more swear words than did truth tellers—especially in cases where the recipients voiced suspicion about the true amount of the endowment. “We think this may be due to the fact that it takes a lot of cognitive energy to lie,” Van Swol says. “Using so much of your brain to lie may make it hard to monitor yourself in other areas.”
Liars used far more third-person pronouns than truth tellers or omitters. “This is a way of distancing themselves from and avoiding ownership of the lie,” Van Swol explains.
Liars spoke in more complex sentences than either omitters or truth tellers.

Equally familiar was the response of those receiving the lie

On average, receivers tended to trust the bald-faced liars far more than they trusted the allocators who tried to deceive by omission. In short, relative silence garnered more suspicion than flat-out falsehoods. “It turns out that omission may be a terrible deception strategy,” Van Swol says. “In terms of succeeding at the deception, it was more effective to outright lie. It’s a more Machiavellian strategy, but it’s more successful.”

    Hey, ho.

Re. Celtic FC investors/shareholders return on investment. This is an observation rather than criticism CP but I think that you (just like me and 99.99% of fans of all clubs) don’t know the ins and outs of our club’s ownership and payments to senior management and directors. The focus here has mostly been on Rangers of course, and the position is generally clearer for those clubs that have either gone into administration or liquidation because there has been greater scrutiny and more accounts information has been made public. TSFM’s comment on the dividend due (at some time) to Dermot Desmond is helpful – we shouldn’t assume that all is well at clubs other than Rangers because they are stable at the moment, supported by nice charitable people who are billionaires/millionaires/got a few bob.

I have made a few changes to the model I have linked to. I’ll upload it later.
I have reduced number of years to 3. Yr1 is last season.
Depending on the actual start point they either just make the black or are in the red by season end. My start point was in region of £7m but saw Dave King talk about £5 or £6m which makes a red bottom line more certain.
What my model does not do because it is annual and monthly figures (cash flow) are not available is pick out your point about STs being on the never never or (and more important) match day income still to arrive. (Its around £2.4m over the year).
So it does look like monthly costs will outstrip monthly income at a rate that will quickly eat up whatever is left from whatever the share income was (and I’m not convinced £22m hard cash less cost was banked in the first place).
Scotland is sometimes sold as a land of legend and myth. Nessie pales into newt size insignificance compared to the myths smsm has generated around The Rangers.

  11. Blu
The amount DD receives from his investment in Celtic is sometimes the source of animated discussion amongst the Celtic support. As is PLs bonus.
Personally I avoid comparing how life has awarded on person and not others as long as Im happy with what it awards me ( and money is not the only indicator).
However in the case of DD, a man of his recognised business acumen would most likely get a greater return on his investment in Celtic if he sold up and invested elsewhere. There is an argument that the emotional part of his investment is costing him more than its earning him.
With regard to PL if his hours worked were used to establish his hourly rate as opposed to a 37 hour week, it would certainly give a more accurate picture of where physically he gets his bonus.
That is not to say greater transparency on both is not a good idea. In fact information on all relevant aspects like opportunity costs of investments or wages of CEOs of other comparable clubs would inform the debate and the judgements that emerge from them.

  13. Am I missing something .

Ibrox Stadium and the training ground are line detailed in the balance sheet , of the Dec 2012 interims. They are shown as having been purchased for £1.5 million, and were then revalued , for the purposes of alternative use by DM HAll , at £6.5 million.
This is detailed in note 7 in the interims, which explains the view taken at acquisition.

    Move on to Note 8

“At 31 August 2012 the Directors valued the Freehold Properties, comprising Ibrox stadium and Murray Park training facility based on a value in use calculation of the net present values of future operating cash flows. The key assumptions in this calculation are the expected future cash flows and the use of a weighted average cost of capital of 12.25 per cent.”

In Note 8 the property assets have been revalued at £33.988 million. This is also confirmed in note 14.

Finally the following statement is included in note 8.

“The value in use calculation relates to all fixed assets of the Group, including Intangible Assets”

Based on the above , there is no doubt that RIFC claims to be the owner of the property assets, and in fact the revaluation makes up 55% of the balance sheet .

Is the suggestion from Bomber Brown, that RIFC have included an asset on the balance sheet that it doesn’t own ?

That seems a stretch , even for Spivs. In fact if it were true, it’s merely an updated version of Brooklyn Bridge being sold to tourists.

The accounts haven’t been audited, however unless there is compeling evidence to the contrary, I think Bomber Brown has this wrong.

That doesn’t change the operational position though, which is that this is an under capitalised business with operating costs significantly in excess of what they should be , given the potential for revenue over the next 2 years

However in the case of DD, a man of his recognised business acumen would most likely get a greater return on his investment in Celtic if he sold up and invested elsewhere.

    =========================

I am working from memory here but I remember reading somewhere that DD has not only lost out on his shares, but the loss so far has been in the region of £10m (as share prices have dropped over the years).

There is no doubt whatsoever that his involvement with Celtic is not a business decision, unless of course the club move elsewhere but I see no prospect of that happening.

  17. Barca – is this the club or the holding company’s balance sheet we’re talking about? I’m not being facetious when I say that – if the spivs have found a way to separate the assets from the football side (removing Jonah from the ship so to speak), that makes for some interesting scenarios, including the leasing of the asset to “the club” who actually owned it in the first place.

As was discussed on publication of these accounts, the only way to show a rosy balance sheet was to revalue the assets, but this also gives rise to the compalint that the assets were sold off under administration/liquidation much chepaper than they should have been.

Ah, the liquidation. Whatever happened to that?

SFA’s Campbell Ogilvie: Fit & Proper Person rules outline “guidance for the board to consider…each case is considered individually.”

You think that there is nothing more to shock/anger you concerning the SFA’ s handling of sevco and then the above rule blows that out of the water.
There was a chance a few weeks ago and all clubs did nothing and cast iron baws Ogilvie was giving another term. So all clubs must think CO is fit and proper.

The same rule will apply to No Surrender Alistair Johnson if he wants back on the board (need to be quick as in his words administration possible before xmas). CO will rubber stamp Paul & Alistair’s application without fear or favour because he CAN.

They are arrogant to the end (sorry the second end) which I really hope is soon.

  23. Just a quick musing from the leftfield… It’s looking more and more likely that the Sevco and Indyref trains going to collide. Most likely a coincidence… but to what extent will the decision makers in this country use the Sevco situation to further their own ends? Many working class people voted Thatcher after she gave them the right to buy and similar happened with Glasgow Labour (and still happens…). Would Sevco fans swap the union for ‘a Rangers playing at Ibrox’?

  25. Re any persons eligibility to be an office bearer of a Club, the relevant section below has an 11 point list, which I understand the SFA Board can completely ignore if it suits them – so, why list them ? They may as well have a clause that says “no matter what, if the Board think a person is Fit and Proper, that’s the end of it”. And the list is not exhaustive, only illustrative, so its a nonsense to have a list such as this in the 1st place, unless of course it is meant to be adhered to, which is what you would expect. I suspect this might be true, with ST income over the past couple of months outstripping expenditure, that scenario might even continue while those STs being paid for monthly continue to give a monthly income. But once they are all fully paid up there’ll be no money in the pot and only pay at turnstiles money coming in. The overall picture, though, is still the same – unless they get a very large injection of funds, administration 2.

If there is £10m in the bank just now, and that includes a high percentage of season ticket sales, then where is the other £10m going to come from. Particularly if there is a shortage of credit facilities available.

The only options if there is a shortfall, would be high cost borrowing, sale of assets or a share issue.

  42. I was disappointed but ultimately not surprised to see Campbell Ogilvie take a vague approach to the possibility of Paul Murray taking up an Ibrox boardroom position. What exactly is this SFA fit and proper person test anyway? History shows us just how easily it can be bypassed with Craig Whyte. I suspect Paul Murray has already passed the only particular test he needs to. He has passed the test simply by being an honest, dignified, honourable, born-to-rule traditional Rangers man. It is the same test Campbell, Walter, Alastair, Alastair, Dave, Sandy, Iain, Kenny etc etc have passed. All it takes is a certain degree of knowledge and knowing which doors to knock and the Scottish media will grant you the keys to their Kingdom forever.

I presumed Zebra would only hand over money collected due to RIFC/TRFC’s difficulty in getting credit. If all ST monies are in, and just over £10m in the bank (and has VAT been paid over yet?), jings, crivens, help ma boab, they’ll really have to do well in the money-spinning Ramsden Cup to survive 😉 and I bet they’re glad they enter the Scottish Cup in the first round too 🙄

I would imagine that a football club would want their season ticket money to come in at the beginning of a VAT period rather than at the end. So they would want their VAT period to be July August September, and not have to pay anything over until the beginning of November.

That would tie in with clubs’ year end being June.

Apparently all the ST money is in
Zebra finance forwarded the cash (unconfirmed)

I suspect that a CEO of The Rangers would baulk at misleading their own supporters and so would have subtracted any VAT from the figure before quoting it. Bloody hell, some big fat pink things just flew past my window 😀

    Indeed

If the man said cash in the bank I am happy to take him at his word.

If £1m of that is VAT they owe then so be it.

Cheers Eufa for the 88k. Should we forward the bill for the delta circa 50k?

Scotland DEFINITELY needs strong summer football.

  57. now we know why sally was allowed to sign anyone he wanted last year
    bonuses were at stake

  58. The chaps on follow follow are starting to get a bit worried I think

Just one example of a high post count member.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This week it seems like Green has gone into kamikaze mode.

I think he knows that he and his cronies aren’t going to be involved with the club for very long, and they are now allowing the shit to hit the fan so that us fans are outraged and force McColl’s hand to buy them out.

If McColl fails to do that, we may be stuck with Green – and that isn’t a situation that would suit anyone.

Administration II is inevitable if Green remains.

one no one has mentioned yet is the BBC still banned from Ibrox.
This is the only club* I know of that has banned away fans from visiting their stadium
has banned their own fans from visiting an away ground
and has banned the national broadcasting company from their own premises
Football without fans is nothing but no other club has done more to drive them away

  63. In response to the Rangers Supporters famous 50 questions I have ONE question I’d like to ask them –

why the **** didn’t you ask these questions last year?

  64. timtim says:

Read that link and laughed. Especially when I scrolled further down than I should … £5.00 entry to Louden for night with CG and all proceeds go to charity!!!!! 😉

  65. Listening to the St Johnstone game. Am I right in the fact that if the away team scores in extra time the advantage is with them on the away goal rule. This IMHO is unfair on the home team and you therefore should always want to play your home game first. If the tie goes to extra time due to a 1-1 scoreline or similar there should be no away rule advantage. C’Mon the Saints
