Not in Front of the Children

The outbreak of internecine warfare at RIFC is being acted out through a real pea-soup fog right now. The war is being fought on so many fronts that it is difficult to see just exactly how many armies are involved, and how the alliances are shaping up.

Craig Mather would appear to be in the Charles Green camp, but it is difficult to imagine that he would be happy to hear old blunderbuss-mouth peppering Ally McCoist with shot. McCoist’s in-character but inelegant riposte, whilst a valiant attempt at deflection and self-preservation, put his mentor and chairman, Walter Smith in a rather awkward position. It gives Mather a double headache as he tries to head off Clyde Blowers boss Jim McColl – and his blowhard ally Paul Murray – at the EGM-pass.

If Mather stands by Green, and Smith does the same for McCoist, then the two main officers of the company will be in opposite, and hostile, camps.

As I say, making sense of it is difficult, but one thing is as clear as an empty window frame: the acrimony, which has been in existence for months, is only now being aired in public because the season ticket drive is over. The one policy that the warring factions have been in agreement with is “Not in Front of the Children”.

Now that the fans have been compelled to buy season tickets in substantial numbers through a mixture of fear, loyalty and a never-ending stream of press spin telling them that “Rangers are on the cusp of greatness if only the supporters cough up”, it seems acceptable that the real war can begin – but what is the prize?

There can be little doubt that all of the factions are aware that a conservative business model is necessary if Rangers are to establish themselves in Scottish football – certainly a more conservative one than that followed by RFC (IL). I infer therefore that the war is not over a Murray vs McCann approach. My best guess is that the war is one of ideals – between one faction which aims to make as much money in the short term as possible, and another which, whilst not averse to a bit of nest-feathering, sees the health of the club and the notion of a continuity Rangers as paramount.

The trouble for Rangers fans is that it is the former faction which holds all the cards – all the shares in fact. I think that all fans of the game of football would hope that people with football at heart would win out here, irrespective of what their partisan loyalties dictate on a day to day basis.

The problem for either warring faction is that the loyalty of the Rangers fans is finite. The “long road (back)” to the top is one which might engage them for while. It is a great journey which is not without its rewards and adventure, but expectations will be massive if and when they get to the top league. When the acceleration of progress meets the buffers of premier championship aspiration, gate money will be in the front passenger seat.  Managing unrealistic expectations is extremely difficult, and evidenced by the use of McCoist’s recruitment sledgehammer to crack the nut of the bottom two divisions.

But here are some questions to which I honestly do not know the answer;

  • How does the Rangersness faction wrest control away from these spivs?
  • How will the spivs attempt to ensure that the Rangersness faction fails in their objective?
  • Can the people in the Rangersness camp REALLY be trusted to act in the best interests of the club even if it is at odds with their own? This, given the close association with the terminal decline of the club they all profess to love.
  • Is there any realistic scenario which allows this club to prosper and challenge for honours within a ten to fifteen year period?

My belief is that the key to the new club being able to establish itself is managing the expectations of the fans. Despite the MSM willingness to cut and paste RFC and RIFC press releases unadulterated, the ability of that same MSM to impress a message of realism into Rangers fans is zero. Not in front of the children in fact.

Is it really a sociological bridge too far to expect Rangers fans to turn down the expectation-ometer? I don’t believe it is. In the eighties, if I recall correctly, a seriously underachieving Rangers team were not met with demands for big spending. There was pressure on them to get better managers who could pick better players, but no demands for Fort Knox to be breached.  If Rangers fans really want a club called Rangers playing in blue at Ibrox, and competing fully in the game, they need to find leaders who can sell the long-termism of such an aspiration. Many will hope, including the spivs and the MSM, that no such leader emerges.

  1. We all knew on here why Rangers were fined and Hearts and Dunfermline were not but has anyone seen any attempt in the MSM to inform their readers why?

Hopefully this will shut them up about this particular perceived attack on their (old) club.

‘As yet the Scottish FA has not received a formal, written request for clarification by Rangers.’

Who wants to be the first to let the SFA know…they won’t be receiving a formal request from the liquidated club!

re Charles Green’s offer to McColl, surely as a listed company that is not his offer to make, after all McColl can simply buy the shares required, notwithstanding the trigger points for general offers (10% or even 30% for controlling interest) or is he suggesting a further issue and dilution? again this would need to be put to the shareholders. RIFC acting as a private CO or a Public company when it suits them, this would be unethical even if CG was still CEO but as a ‘consultant’ with no formal position this is surely going against a few regulatory rules.
    —————————————————————————————————————————————-

As I stated earlier just another part of the jigsaw to show that the whole thing is out of control and nobody is willing to look at the bigger picture and take the necessary action.

One hope is at last the SFA have grown a pair and shown Mather and McCoist to be the dog whistlers we already took them for. Talk about egg on face.
I am wondering if McCoist will go for a third attempt of calling someone out for inifo when he already knows the score.
Something like ‘OK gone and sack me then’ Yes Ally the letter is already in the post!!

As for Chuckies latest I’m sure he didn’t just pick £14m figure offer to Jim McColl out of the air.

What chance that is a little clue to exactly how deep in the doo doo they are?

  4. Jeez Louise. Was that not the 5 days to on holiday. One question. Has anyone thought of the implications of some kind of of breakaway rangers, if they’re going to have to rent ibrox anyway? I wonder if that’s the purpose of the sfa statement – a sort of don’t even think about it message re fragmentation.

Still think CG will sell out to the highest bidder, most likely a once and for all fan buyout following a thinly veiled tesco type comment. Suspect this would be better for his long term health!

  5. VC @ 5:45 pm.

There is a portion of the support want Ally out, however I would say it is a minority.
The goalposts are changing all the time. Prior to today’s developments I fully expected CG to get a rough ride at the match tonight.
After Chico’s appearance on ssn coupled withJ.Mcoll’s statement I’ve changed my mind…again. I think AM and CG will get to christmas 😮 sort of killing two birds with the one stone, if current predictions are to prove accurate.
Whatever you think of Chico, he could sell yachts in the Sahara.

  6. The SFA waiting on a formal request….is a bit like me waiting for a phone from my Granny….she passed away 20 years ago…

  10. In the real world McCoist would now be subject to his employer’s disciplinary procedures and likely facing dismissal on grounds of gross misconduct.

In such circumstances he would not enjoy any contractual severance payment.

Scottish football needs to take this opportunity to sort TRFC out once and for all.

  19. My understanding of the Jim McColl decision (I’m a little slow on the uptake and its probably been voiced already) is firstly the obvious one – that he feels no need to invest his money in a complete omnishambles.

He may have made a different decision if he was investing in something with stability and a healthy stream of incoming monies on a consistent basis.

Their position is not one of ‘We need someone to throw a few million into the pot and gain a new moniker of ‘Chief Investor’ or whatever. Their position is that they need a serious amount of revenue streams to continue their ‘journey’. They need millions consistently to maintain their position as a third tier football club. If that is possible they will need more than these millions on a consistent basis to maintain their position if they make it to the next tier.

There are precious few who will be prepared to pump their money on a constant basis into this basketcase in the hope that one day they will hear Champions League music being played at the Sports Direct Arena. If there was even the remotest possibility of this happening. What sort of timescale do they realistically expect to see a return on their millions they have invested.

Forget fan buy outs, once again that’ll be a one off sum of money. Will these same fans be prepared to pump their £000’s into the basketcase every single month for years to come.
    Doubt it.

Admin 1 coming up for this new club/company just the same as their last club/company.

  20. Just lifted this from Scotzine website:
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Green called on McColl to put his money where his mouth is, he said: “What I say to Jim McColl, the world’s richest Scotsman, is put £14m in a bank account by Friday of this week and me and my consortium will deliver to you 20 million shares.

“That is about 28 per cent of this club and then I will know that you are serious about it. You have then invested some cash in the club you want to run. However, you are not going to do it without putting some money on the table and, up to today, and after 18 months, none of you have done it.”

Notice the 28 per cent of the CLUB.
What about 28 per cent of RIFC since that owns the club not to mention the other assets.
So for £14M you get to own a minority shareholding of something completely owned by the guy who sold you the 28%.

Dave King may have fell for this with SDM but I don’t think this particular part of history will repeat itself.

People have also talked about the points deduction if they go into administration again but I thought it was 25% of last years total since that was the SPL rule and, as we were all told, the SPL took over SPFL.

  21. Office Of Scottish Charity Regulator, Advertising Standads Agency,HM Revenue and Customs!Scottish Football Association reports. Its only when you go through these responses that you see the depths to which these people have sunk.To cheat and lie to government agencies and football authorities is bad enough, but to attempt to divert money from a charity is beneath contempt. These people have absolutely no moral compass whatsoever. They will get what is coming to them and it can’t be soon enough.

  22. A snippet from the cut bit on SSN video above ….

CG … some say we will have run out of cash by december …

There was no prompt …. no direct question …. so why say it ?

    So why quote Phil !

On … ‘the staw that boke the camels back’ … MM called the EGM …
Strange statement ….. but maybe not so since we now know that PM wants Biln (of PWC) onboard to conduct a forensic analysis of accounts ……

and then AJ tonight …… according to Walter (allegedly) …
“You’d be astonished if you knew what was happening” regarding changes in shares.
    then …
The revelations about Green are not over

And backing PM …… worth following Sams 3i links

  23. Some discussion on Twitter a few days ago with a journo (might have been one of the STV lot or Ewan Murray) culminated in everyone agreeing that it was 25% of last season’s total. They finished on 83.

    21 point deduction?

  24. justshatered says:
    August 6, 2013 at 7:28 pm

I may be wrong, but I thought it was 1/3 of last years points total, not 1/4. Happy to be corrected on that.

  25. This is from the STV Q& A about the Hearts admin.
=========================================== If they had gone into administration in the close season, the club would have started the new season on minus 15 points, regardless of their tally in the previous campaign.

If a club goes into administration during an SPFL season it will be docked 15 points.

However only 10 points would be removed with immediate effect. A further five points will then be deducted at a point the league’s board deems it would be “the most effective”.

  26. beatipacificiscotia says:
    August 6, 2013 at 7:38 pm

No wait, you’re right, it was 33% – that would be a 28 point deduction.

  28. Araminta Moonbeam QC says:
    August 6, 2013 at 7:40 pm

Hearts finished with 44pts last season so 1/3 is 15 point deduction. May be the 15pts was coincidental but, again, happy to be corrected on that.

I’ve heard quoted that there isn’t much difference in the quality of the teams in what is now Div 1 and Div 2, but I think there is. The current Div 1 crop will be teams who have competed in the 4th tier and been promoted, and others who have played in the 2nd tier of Scottish Football. Rangers may be able to cope with a 28pt deduction and win the league, though I wouldn’t risk a penny on it.

Only if he was selling them to the hard of thinking.

Most people took him for what he was right from his first appearance, or very soon thereafter.

Only those who really wanted to believe all of the smoke and mirrors actually fell for it. They then actively attacked anyone who tried to point out what he really was. They were assisted in that by their “leaders” who also bought into his Lillian.

  33. Oh my aching sides.
This afternoon sums up Rangers problems.
T’Gers fans out to lynch Green for getting rid of Walter as a billionaire is going to buy them.
So Chuck appears on SSN, babbles a bit, tells JMc to give him £14m and within 30m said billionaire says no chance he’s investing a penny more.
Cue Rangers fans giving Green another chance (cf Sunincapricorn)

  35. Why wait?

Rangers have some funds in the bank from STs, some share issue money left from the £22m raised and assets.

It may be the case that the spivs simply want to take as much of this as possible and run for the hills.

If you’re a spiv, is it worth it to hang about til Dec to offload shares, which are devaluing with each week and boardroom story, whilst the club spends its way through funds and assets?

Maybe better to get out with what they can now, albeit leaving the Club limping on into this season and admin2 in a week or so.

I guess they dont care, so long as they have control of decent assets and some return on dosh invested.

  48. Listened to Tom English tonight on BBC Sports sound. He stated that Jim McColl was not investing any money into Govan club and also did not want to be on the board. Keith Jackson’s billionaire seems to have some common sense.

No sugar daddy there then, what can the DR print now to sweeten up the bears. Also CG on SSN with the P Murray comment that he may not have £2 it reminded of the old comedy sketch “twofora pounda twoforapounda”

Joking apart though would you want 2 clubs from Govan?.

  49. Charles Green’s re-emergence at Ibrox, and the appointment of Daniel Stewart as advisers, brings back memories of Green’s arrival as Chairman of Nova Resources in January 2012 (after company owner Rafat Rizvi changed its name from Tembusu Investments and took a back seat following his conviction for bank fraud in Indonesia).
On the same day Green was appointed at Nova, Daniel Stewart were appointed the firm’s Nominated Advisers and Brokers.
Soon after, Daniel Stewart predicted that the signing of a coal transportation deal in Mongolia would see Nova surge in value, with a Target Price of 11p per share.
But the contract wasn’t renewed this year. Nova announced a loss of £3.2million on a turnover of £1.2million (some feat!).
Its shares are now 0.75p and heading south. Fast.
Rangers fans are slowly waking up to the realisation that their company/club/institution (delete to taste) is in the hands of cynical spivs whose first priority is to line their own pockets, even if that means conning and ripping off gullible smaller investors and stripping all value and assets from the firm’s decaying husk.
If only someone, anyone, had warned them . . .

  50. Lord Hodge will succeed Lord Hope, one of the two Scottish Justices, who retires on 27 June 2013. Lord Hodge will not take up his role until the beginning of the new legal year, in October 2013. He was appointed a Senator of the College of Justice in 2005, and sits in both the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary.
The three appointments were made by Her Majesty The Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor, following the recommendation of an independent selection commission. The commission consulted across each of the Supreme Court’s three United Kingdom jurisdictions before making their recommendations.
Lord Hodge said: “I am very honoured to have the opportunity to serve as a member of the Supreme Court. I look forward to working with my colleagues from the three jurisdictions of the United Kingdom.”

    Now,
Before you go Your Lordship – there may be a few things to clear up – like D+P and such and such like – and the stramash that followed D+Ps `minor success` that enabled the `going concern` of such `chosen` pillars of society [aka spivs] to create such a debacle unequalled in Scottish Sport.

Please don`t confuse these with the `four pillars` of the SFA which are useless marketing humbug to preserve amoral behaviour by the SFA board in sinecure avoidance of duty

    These are different `pillars`
These `pillars` of snake-oil salesmen – you permitted to operate, and admins who played fast and loose with a long standing Charity – Your Lordship
Call them in – Pl Correct this nonsense

  51. Graham Spiers @GrahamSpiers 31m
My HeraldScotland column. Wanted: A Rangers Man. With
    Integrity. And Money.

    ========================

No Graham, to think Rangers need someone with money is to totally miss the point, by quite some distance.

To paraphrase Santayana, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Rangers need someone who understands business, who can make difficult decisions and who can put in place a proper workable business model.

They need reality or nothing will change. The cycle will repeat and repeat.

People like you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

I may be wrong but I think CW has aged slightly, must be the stress. As for the Ally & Mr Mather under pressure bit how funny and brave would it be if during the next The Rangers away game Under Pressure by Queen was pumping out as they took to the field 😆

  53. Richard Wilson ‏@timomouse 15m
Were Ibrox to shut, where is the closest football stadium to Glasgow likely to fit Rangers? Give you a clue – they’re playing Rangers now.
    Retweeted by Charlie Greencraig

  54. The Rangers Historian, Mr Mason, now there’s an apt name for someone working at Ibrox. BTW it looks as though Mr Mason and Ole Craigy are doing hovering table trick, look no hands 😆

  55. A poster on the LSE share site points out that in tonights video Charles pooh pooh’s the likes of Jim McColl for coming in and causing trouble after Green ‘bought the club’ then reminds us to ask the question – how much has Charles put in of his own money?????

    See 3.02mins of the video.

  56. I love this movie…and have to admit, I could listen to t’Charles all day – he gave more away in a single interview than any Sevco statement since he left! Confirms all our suspicions and informed speculation over the last few months.

Now, we are in the endgame – this is compelling, car crash TV 🙂

  57. CG
I wouldnt sell for £50 a share unless the buyer was gojng to move the club forward

  58. 10 mins into video

So you don’t think calling Imran Ahmad your Paki friend was racist?”
-Where I come from, we call a spade a spade peter 🙄

  59. CG – Very desperately – trying to re-write history
Smokescreens to cash-up before they`re rumbled

  60. Charles Green’s consortium bought all of the assets of Rangers for £5.5m (he thought that included £2m prize money from the previous season which would have meant a net £3.5m). Those assets were bought by Sevco.

He then organized an IPO when he floated Sevco on the stock exchange, that included sales to private investors.

The private investors (Rangers’ fans) bought a small fraction of the company … for £5.5m.

It’s a pity a wealthy Rangers man couldn’t put the money up front for the fans then they would own the whole business.

  61. Again, the stv youngster posing straightforward questions

  62. Is it just me or are we seeing a sudden outbreak of honesty and straight forward thinking from a number of quarters we haven’t seen capable of this before?

    OSCAR reveal findings
    SFA Statement
Smith finally admits he’s out of his depth and its a mess – then walks
And now we even have some (not all sure), media organisations asking straight questions and reporting previously unheard of levels of accuracy of whats going on.

    Am I imagining this?

OR could it be that CF outing the widescale PR manipulation of various authority and media types has left them all feeling the urge to just deal a straighter “bat” going forward?

OR might the most effective elements of the PR manipulation have ceased or slipped in some way?

Has someone stolen all of Jack’s blackmail material or something?

  63. Ha! Just watched the Peter Smith interview. Even better than the last, T’Charles has more front than Brighton. He’s right though IMO about the various Rangers men who have baulked at cashing the cheques their mouths had written.

Ironic that the bears could have bought the assets, history etc etc for the £5.5m they invested as shares in RIFC and owned it all outright, instead, they are riding along on the back of the bus as it plunges over the cliff….FFS is there no SMSM journo that is willing to call them out on this? Peter Smith was robust with T’Charles but he’s an easy target and loves the sport (and is about to trouser best part of £3.5m at 70p per share if he gets his way) but where is the media pm on the real culprits and Rangers Men eg SDM, Paul Murray, etc etc

  64. The SFA statement: “In response to the recent public comments from Rangers FC, and in particular Craig Mather and Ally McCoist, ..”
    —-
And the the way it should truthfully and accurately have read:

“..In response to the recent public comments from a director and former manager of RFC(IL), who are now employed by a club that is
    a) legally distinct and unconnected to RFC(IL)
    b) in membership of the SFA only by an act of deceit on our part …. ”

But the SFA is so hopelessly compromised by the 5-way agreement!

  65. Struggled through the CG STV thing finally.
Peter I think did well to a point.
How on earth can you let that man sitting face to face with you refute the truth of the Charlotte tapes viz a viz Craigie.
Personally I would have played them to him.
He had enough time 28 minutes.
Very Good try but an opportunity lost.

If anyone hasn’t watched this can I commend it to you. Fantastic work from the STV interviewer.

It is rarely I feel inclined to compliment someone from the media in Scotland. This is one of those rare exceptions. I believe it is the same chap who Mr Green made a fool of himself with before.

  67. Regarding the £5.5 M CG paid (sic) for whatever it was he bought, (the right to say he bought the medals and so he fought at the Somme if you wish), why was he the only bidder not to see the £30M “black hole” that Bill Miller saw and which scared off the Blue Nights and the Cardigan? Or did the Cardigan and friends really bid £6m and not get a reply?
Is it possible that for him it was not there, because he believed he had Ibrox, or did he just not care, because of short termism and confidence that he could “shaft” CW?
We shall see, but in the meantime, who would know? Walter? Pinsent Masons? CF?

  68. If the excuse for the charity fraud was that you cannot legally pay out to a charity when you are in administration, why did they pay £68,000 to it then? Is there a punishment for that?

Chals rates the club value at what was it? £14M for 27% , total roaster. I thought it only cost a pound in the top flight, with big fancy dan players worth money, and the bike.

    I’m glad he’s back.

  69. Would never try and justify the position of CG but two noticible points from his interview on Sky were:

    1. He mentioned they would never run out of money whilst he has shares, which i suspect is 100% true; and
    2. He states thay have the second highest wage bill in Scotland so they should win a cup as a minimum, and how could you disagree.

All the rest is to get the the end of the period when shares can be sold and his rebuff of the proposed new buyers is exactly why people bring him in to do this type of role.
