Scottish Football Administration in the 21st Century

Imagine you are one of those people who have a nice big mahogany desk, with a gloss finish set in a big corner suite office which comes complete with a picture window, a break out area, a couch to lie down on in moments of stress, a quietly playing stereo sound system, fridge, plush carpet and loads of wee executive toy like things of your choosing.

Imagine, just for a moment, that outside your office you have the executive German car that is almost compulsory when you work in such an office. Added to that, you also have the benefit of a large six figure salary, a pension scheme, substantial holidays, a bonus scheme which nicely enhances your already excellent salary, fantastic perks and trips abroad as part of your job, and that you fill a position which leads to invitations to the most fantastic events, do’s, and sporting occasions imaginable.

Imagine the respect you must command from your peers, your family and friends.

Imagine the awe that you must be held in at dinner parties and social events when you are introduced to strangers for the first time– strangers who will have heard your name, and know of your position in society.

Imagine the personal and professional respect you must command from others in your field — or any other field for that matter — when you go to conferences and meetings in foreign cities and with foreign counterparts.

Imagine the envy that many others sometimes feel for someone who has succeeded in business and society to this extent.

Then imagine that the big office described above is at Hampden?

What a bummer!!

Now, I mention all of this because if you were one of the big cheeses at at Hampden, I wonder just what you do with yourself when the large rosewood door of your office closes behind you when you get in there each morning?

Maybe you make a coffee? Read the papers? Check the mail? Go to a meeting about the latest in 3G or is it 4G pitches being installed in a ground or two in the Shetlands?

However, no matter what you do and who you speak to THAT file is always there— always at the corner of your desk, neatly up there at the top left hand corner just beyond the desk top golf set and  above the Newton’s cradle with the balls that spell your name or whatever.

That file– the one that relates to the finances, compliance, directors details and ownership of Rangers Football Club.

At least that is what the top of the file says. Though to be fair it is a continuation file… continuing from the one that was opened two months ago and is fit to burst already with reports, memo’s and letters- which in turn was a continuation of the one before that and the one before that and the one before that and on and on.

Maybe that is not the correct name for the club?

Maybe that is something that can be clarified  at the next meeting with the Directors and CEO of the club— whoever they might be at that time?

No matter where you go in the room, you can see that file from every position. There is just no getting away from it.

Who owns The Rangers?

There are all sorts of reports, share prospectuses, memos, deeds, documents, contracts, letters, e-mails all asking the same thing. And there you are— none the wiser.

Please clarify this, please clarify that, are there any signed but  unrecorded documents, or contracts?

Are the Companies House records accurate? is the Land register accurate?

At the end of the day you just lie on the couch, place a cold cloth over your head and hope it will all go away.

Then the accounts come out. Oh the figures are shocking and they confirm that most of the people you negotiated with to get their team playing football somewhere after the collapse and liquidation of RFC PLC have exited stage left with huge severance cheques.

They now live in France, or Singapore or the Cayman Islands and you can bet they will never darken a door in Mount Florida on a wet February morning ever again.

But that is not the worst of it — the bleeding internet is full of leaks— documents, letters, e-mails, contracts, company forms and all sorts.

You wouldn’t mind if the documents leaked were ones that you had seen before, but in the main they are things that you have never seen and never had disclosed.Every day someone calls and asks ” Have you seen the latest?” and of course you haven’t so you stand there feeling like a complete chookie!!!

Every day you call the compliance and monitoring guys:

” Eh have you seen this? Have you been notified that he is a director?”
” No boss – never seen that? Never knew it existed?”
” So who owns the company if that is correct?”
” Eh Dunno boss — not sure of anything over there any more!”
“Ok have you checked the titles with the lawyers?”
” yes but the title as registered looks ok, but there is no guarantee that it hasn’t been sold to someone else and they have not registered their title for the moment!”
” Have you spoken to the lawyers? Have you asked for clarification?”
” yes Boss — the Lawyers don’t really answer our questions– well at least not fully!”
” What about these accounts – there are 57 pages there – what do they tell us?”
” Well they tell us that the figures are not good, boss, but not immediately critical.”
” Are they paying their taxes?”
” Appear to be boss– but we can’t be sure.can we? We were told they were paying their taxes before and … well you know the rest.”
” Ok, but Pinsent masons rule out the Whyte guy being involved?”
” Ah well not really – they don’t go into the company he says he owns – they sort of ignore that part!”
” But they carried out an independent investigation, surely?”
True boss, but the independent investigation was only into what the non independent guys wanted investigating Boss, and they appear to have finished their report without speaking to all the witnesses.”
” Ok but the accounts – what do the accounts say about Whyte being the real owner — I mean they are from Deloittes for God sake – they must make the position clear?”
” Well we have had a look at them boss and in that regard the accounts are King Kenny!”
” King Kenny?”
” Aye King Kenny Boss – with regard to Whyte’s claim they say ” maybes aye– maybes naw” and they leave it at that”
” Jesus, well have you written to the Directors?”
” Aye – half the letters have come back marked “Gone away”.Boss”
” Do you know who the shareholders are?”
” Naw Boss”
“Do they have a bank account and a bank reference ?”
” Naw Boss”
” Who’s coming to the next meeting from their side?”
” Dunno Boss”
” Is there anything you can tell me that lets me close this file and get it off my desk for good?”
” Naw boss”
” Well who did we grant membership to last year?”
” The first time or the second time Boss?”
” What do you mean – first time or second time?”
” We started out granting membership to one company and then changed it to another”
” Two companies – owned by the same people?”
” Dunno Boss– but they sounded the same.”
” And which one got a licence?”
” Dunno boss”
” What?”
“Was the licence not granted by Mr Longmuir boss? And then ratified by us as a formality?”
” Why are you asking me, you are the compliance guys?”
” Aye but we were told it would all be ok by … well by someone ….. and by Mr Longmuir”
” When did he tell you that?”
” Told us one day at Ibrox Boss – I think it was at half time?”
” Half Time?”
” Aye – though it might have been full time boss …..  free bevvy and sandwiches so can’t quite remember”.
” Well who has the paperwork?”
” Lost boss”
” Lost?”
” Yes Boss – it was meant to come up from the SFL but never appeared. Turns out that the SFL was run as an unincorporated body and none of its records etc, are intact or have ever been audited …… Boss.  Mr Ballantyne might have them in his garage Boss! ……… Boss? ….. are you still there? Boss?”

The man in the corner suite leaves the phone dangling, goes to his fridge for a cold drink and switches on the executive plasma hanging on the wall by way of the remote control on his desk.

The screen beams into life and an advert for the brand of soft drink that he is holding fills the wall. The very same brand of soft drink that has just been announced as the official soft drink to partner Scottish Football.

The executive, looks at his drinks can, looks at the file on the corner of the desk, looks at the abandoned phone and finally looks at the screen just as the speakers spell out clearly ………….. the benefits of coming from a long line of Fannies.

This is Scottish Football Administration in the 21st Century.

  1. Does anyone else get the impression over the last few days that the “Propaganda” Spin Merchants have gone into overdrive?

Observing this Car Crash, from a purely SMSM point of view, it strikes me that there seems to be a bit of a panic from the Old Crowd who previously used to prop up the old club formerly known as Rangers Football Club.

Have you noticed “Legends” like WS are now being wheeled out to elaborate on how well they are doing on the pitch, whilst avoiding his own personal opinion on what is going on behind the scenes?

Have you noticed Sycophants like Chick Young practically bending over backwards trying to defend “Football People” like WS and AM, telling us all that they have had nothing to do with this scandal? Yeah!

Have you noticed Alistair Johnson has suddenly re-appeared to give his usual non-committal views, just at the same time his pal Dave King also miraculously stepped out from the Dallas shower?

I foresee a spin program over the next few weeks intended to brainwash the Peepil, and remind them of what a great club they used to support. I also foresee many more “Legends” being wheeled out to get the tears running down the cheeks, just in time for the big EGM!

It’s an absolute pantomine, and so transparent. It’s also funny and cringing to watch at the same time.

There seems to be a distinct smell of desperation in the air round Govan way at the moment. Do you think the “Old Guard” are beginning to see that time may be running out?

Methinks they’ve maybe left it a tad late! The Horse may already have bolted!

p.s. Re The Big Fight tonight between The Chycophant (My Copyright!) and Tom English, if it was a Boxing Match, I would hate to be Chyco’s shoulders tonight, all that time spent on The Ropes! Nice one Tom!

So Aberdeen voted out of selfishness. If you ever met Milne you’d understand that. Why did Celtic vote against it?

Small point – but you are attributing posts to the wrong people
    ++++++++++++++
I assume Celtic voted on exactly the same basis as Aberdeen- Selfish self interest.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wow – out of self interest – a once in a life time chance to improve the game and Celtic find a new “Old/New Firm” partner to ossify all that is killing the game.

    Well done youse two.

  3. My Dad used to take me to Scotland games at Hampden in the early 60s. We always went to the uncovered end, in the top tier, he always worried about safety. There used to be a lot of noise from the covered end which sounded like abuse when some Scottish players got the ball. I used to look at my Dad with a quizzical look, what’s going on, he would look straight ahead….

    Sometimes we got very wet.

The West terracing cover at Hampden was under construction the night Celtic played Racing in the World Championship in late 67. From memory that is. If I’m correct that would make it 67 or 68 before completion.

“If you were standing at the back of the Celtic end the goal at the Rangers end was over 400 yards away.Nearly 1/4 mile!
Some of the stats were staggering.”

Staggering. And inaccurate if you ask me.

    Have a look at the old photos of Hampden here;
    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=hampden+park+aerial+photographs&rlz=1C1RNPN_enGB396GB397&es_sm=93&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=4NFVUtyOD4af0QWKhIHACg&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1024&bih=677&dpr=1

and tell me how you could be 400yds away from the goal at the west terracing when you are at the back of the east terracing?
    ===============================================
    Not disagreeing with you.
Depends what age you are and how your memory is.I can remember the old Hampden, before the Rangers end was covered. It was massive. The terracing was made up of a series of concrete plinths filled in with ash. Most of the pics in your link show a redeveloped Hampden and some show the Celtic end with the back removed.
The Rangers end was definitely not covered when CFC beat Dunfermline in 1965.
If the pitch was,say 120 yards long and you had the massive arc behind the goals then you’d be nearly 200 yards just to the foot of the terracing.
If you take Hampden out of the stats in its entirety then the Celtic end alone would have been the 3rd biggest stadium in the country after Ibrox, and Celtic Park .

A genuine cross topic question. I was once told by a very Celtic minded Celtic fan that some of the money for the roof over the Rangers end at Hampden came from Celtic after they won the big cup in Lisbon. Anyone ever heard similar tales?
    ++++++++++++
Not true, I think. As I remember it, the Rangers end was already covered when I attended the 1964/65 cup final.
    ————————————

It’s late at night but you-tube is a friend you can rely on. Film from the 1966 cup final shows no covering at the “west” terracing but move on to 1968 and it’s there. Still looking for footage of 1967.

Just to confirm that I personally was disgusted that the 9-3 proposal was blocked by Celtic and Aberdeen. I said so at the time, and so did quite a few other “Celtic-minded” posters. I want real change in Scottish football, and I know exactly where the blame lies for it not happening- with the clubs. I had hopes that some of the smaller clubs might favour a “ridd-oot” at the SFA, but the AGM blew that idea out of the water. Which is why I’ve done walking away.

  9. re hampden.. I was at the 1972 final (dixie hat trick) was up the “rangers end” cos hibs could only fill half the end.
my memory of that day ( i was only 11) was of fans of both sides being up in the rafters … throwing bottles at each other

  10. OT, I also remember being at Hampden in the Summer of ’75, in the Celtic End, watching the Cup Final. Celtic Vs Airdrie. Billy MacNeill’s last game (Paul Wilson 2 goals, penalty by Pat MacCluskey?) I was 13 at the time, Sun was splitting the Sky. Not a cloud in sight. I wondered where the water was coming from around my shoes, turned round and there was a guy trying to p$£s into a Tennants Can!

Oh Hampden, how I loved you! I was also at the Semi at Hampden. I think Celtic beat Hearts 1-0, Glavin if I remember?

And Yes, before anyone says “I thought you supported St Mirren?”, you are correct! However, as an impressionable 13 year old in those days, I just loved football, especially Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain. Also my mate’s Dad was Celtic daft and used to go to all the games, so I got invited along as well. All I wanted to do was watch Dalglish in action, plus Tommy Burns, what a player he was. Sorry for going all soppy tonight, but it did bring back memories.

Of course, a year later in 1976, Alex Ferguson became Manager of St Mirren and transformed a town!

    Thanks for the memories!

Jack’s fingers must be worn down to the bone with all the typing on RM to support the board! Postponing games, publishing out of date accounts, bullying bloggers, convincing Ally to take a £400k haircut, seeing Jabba out the door on a ‘no comment’ compromise agreement, settling the stress of current creditors, soothing CO’s nerves about future viability, seeing off BDO, keeping the clear, blue water between TRFC and oldco before the UTT appeal, clinging on to the myth of ‘history’, printing banners for demos and convincing other clients that they’re having an off day down Edminston way.

I started having doubts the minute I posted that, and I’ve been looking at photos of Hampden ever since.Never thought there would be film on youtube from back then, Obviously I was too busy watching the game in 65 to take in the surroundings properly. It was a great game!

Nae worries pal – same for me. No been tae a game this season ( first time in 37 years). I feel bad about it because my club wants to go all fan ownership(which I agree with) but when it comes to the big decisions about who really makes them it is not transparent to the fans. They just want our money and unless they stand up to the ones who won’t change I won’t be back.

I used to deliver Dixie’s paper in Paisley. He lived in a tenement flat with his Wife and Wee Lad. He was a lovely guy who always had time for anybody wanting to talk football. You’d often see him in the local park having a kick about with the wee yin. I always remember being taken aback one day watching him asking for 20 regal king size from the ice cream van though. He’s a great guy.

I’d better retire to bed now, getting all sentimental! Night All!

That is the spirit we lack in the game today. Couple of my pals were Celtic and I’ve been with them in Nottingham (almost crushed – thanks Davie Hay for telling us to ” move back from the fence” – like we could). and other big nights – cause they were my pals.

Went to Well v Celtic at Parkheid with my pal on the Celtic bus – and first 45 was in the jungle and second half in the “Rangers End” .

IF there are only two teams competing for the riches of the game the fans are played for mugs & cash. I was away from Scotland before the stuff I mentioned above for 16 years. When I got back in 2002 I could not recognise the football or our society.

There were pubs that I considered – well just pubs but which had become “Rangers” or ” Celtic” pubs and others which opened or changed their “theme” to one or the other. I don’t go to pubs much but I make a point of going into the two now “themed” ones i used to go to – when I do – I’m not them – they are not me.

Back in the 60s before the days of ringpulls, you had to pierce the can with a can opener, leaving a jaggy serrated edge. Peeing into one of those was a dangerous business. As a young lad, I remember the guy beside me at one crowded match turned to me as he was about to take a leak, saying “Yi’d better no dunt me noo, son…”.

The fitba was better in those days too. 🙂

That’s correct, as far as drinking the beer went.
But those holes were too small to pee into, so afterwards it was customary to open up the top of the can completely, leaving the jagged edges.

And of course, if a goal was scored, those full-again cans would be knocked over, soaking anyone in the vicinity.

  22. Like many on here, I saw the redevelopment of Hampden Park as yet another scam by the authorities. Imagine you have to develop a national stadium? Straight away you have to make it the biggest in the country. Hampden Park isn’t even the biggest in the city. Secondly, the money set aside for development has to improve the stadium experience for the punters as a whole. The authorities set aside something like 45 million of public and lottery money to redevelop the main stand whilst simply putting seating where the terracing used to be in two thirds of the stadium, oh aye, and a roof. The first four or five rows can see nothing of the match due to being at pitch level and behind the advertising hordes. Thirdly, like most projects like this around the world, especially the UK, the site is moved to a new green field location that has good transport links and well away from public housing. What do the SFA do? Redevelop a Victorian site that was originally chosen when there were few private cars or public buses. Subsequently the modern Hampden experience starts with a kilometre walk from the nearest bus parking area, with the same at the end of the match., with no close motorway links at all, thus guaranteeing gridlock after a big match. (unless of course you are one of the fat cats and get to use the stadium car park). Someone, somewhere made a right few quid with this white elephant. Who ultimately sanctioned this plan?

  23. Just got a chance to listen to the English and Young knockabout from last night. Great wee slip of the tongue from Chico at 33:58 min

  24. I worked on the ground staff at Hampden in the early 70s.I well remember lining the pitch, putting up the nets, cutting the grass,oh and post match, retrieving wallets and purses from the toilet cisterns which the pickpockets had nicked.Overtime for midweek internationals was paid cash in a pay packet which you had get from the front office.Easier said than done as more often than not Glasgow’s finest wouldn’t believe my “but I work here”plea.
    I thought it a pretty amateurish organisation back then.Little did I know…………

  25. 11-1 vote

I think you will find their was No back door deal cut

That in fact Aberdeen voted with Celtic because of the dwindling numbers in traveling support over the last decade or so

Outside the old firm the biggest support coming to their ground was Dundee Unt
And with RFC(IL) kicked into touch 🙂
It made no sense for Aberdeen to hand over half their gate with ONLY 2 home games (against Celtic) were the away fans Could equal or out number the home support

Forgot to add LET The TDs commence
The truth that there is no big Conspiracy is sometimes hard to take 🙁

  26. Further on Hampden.

As I recall it was the SFA led by Jim Farry who decided to go down the route of where we are now. Basically that was a spanking new stand with facilities that ensured then UEFA 5-star status, but which would also house the only people the SFA cared about. The other three quarters of the ground was for those the SFA did not care a toss about, and is covered terracing with seats bolted on, and completely inadequate toilet and catering facilities. IMO It is a disgrace and an embarrassment that two European Finals were held there.
We could rely on the media to highlight the inequalities of it all, but perhaps the view from the press facilities in the spanking new stand is too breathtaking to notice.

  29. tcup. Sorry can’t let that past. The rebel 10 specifically agreed that gate money split would be excluded from any revision to the voting rights (i.e. would remain at 11-1) so that’s a red herring. (btw: Lawell called them the rebel 10 which means the establishment 2 were….?)
Neepheid: Thanks for the link. Although neither I nor any other Dons fan doubts that Milne backed off it is speculation that it was a duo with Celtic and certainly not the case that he was “buying time”, this issue is deid as far as they are concerned. I’d be amazed if it was about Celtic and Aberdeen only: Stewarty may be many things but he’s nae daft!
Thanks to Drew P for elevating my original ramble into a decent discussion. Not OT after all, ken fit I mean?

Listening to the BBC Sportsound podcast from last night:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/scotfoot

Is the dam beginning to crack. Good discussion surrounding Rangers living above their means – financial basket case.
    ——————-

SSB interesting too, in spite of the presence of DJ. Some fine callers getting through and credit to Jim Delahunt for being about as fair-minded as you’ll get on that show and for letting them on. Much more free debate without Keevins insulting and shouting down callers.

Alistair J pretty damning on David Murray & Jack Irvine. So much for Murray being ‘duped’ about Whyte. Seems to me AJ has dropped Murray right in the manure. AJ has also given a bit of credence to Miss Fakes too, and possibly put himself in the frame as her alter ego.

As others have said, Tom English is growing in stature. Chico (sook-sook Walter) digs himself into an ever deeper hole every time he’s on air. I honestly wonder if he listens back to his own performances. A professional would, and with critical ears. In his case I actually doubt it.

Jagsman. I don’t know the exact measurements of the old Hampden, but it was colossal to say the least!
At the back of the Celtic end it seemed 400 yards to the front! Not sure if the 70’s fashion of painted safety ‘hard hats’ started there, but wouldn’t be surprised as any time bottles and cans were thrown from the back, it was the kids near the front that usually copped it.
There was little to no chance of a drunk man in a packed terrace throwing an object such a distance.
Unfortunately it was those pics that made the back page headlines too often then.

Someone asked earlier on what was across from the main stand? It was of course the North enclosure with the old North stand towering above it. You could slip up there for a great view as the game neared the end.

When this stand was removed, they lost the ‘Hampden roar.’ That’s progress I suppose 😉

I’ve not been back to the national stadium since the 2001 cup final. I wouldn’t go back to that soulless place
    if it they paid me!

  33. And another thing. As ground staff we used to sneak up to the old press box to see if there was any grub left.More often than not, there was only trays of half eaten sandwiches. Who ate aw the pies? I also seem to remember graffiti scrawled on the desks by folk like Jim Blair.Happy days.

  34. Daily Record I saw in Tesco touting Dave King for chairman and investment. no mention on BBC radio, who concentrated on Hart going.

No link as not got used to new tablet 🙁

  35. Sorry – had to post. I was unfortunate enough to listen to the first half hour of Sportsound last night and for those giving English praise, you really need to think about it. He did mention King’s “shame and glib , liar” reference, but could not wait to gloss over it. “He’s sorted everything out” I think was his phrase before talking about King just the way our press started talking about SDM,Whyte and then Green when they came on the scene.

In any other country King’s criminal activities would be scrutinized and condemned. You could argue they would probably spend an entire show dedicated to it, in light of the previous 3 owners of RFC/Sevco all having previous for dodging tax(or point blank refusing to pay it). They would probably argue and with huge justification – can our football authorities, given what has passed really let this guy become involved ?

Only in Scotland could our MSM just gloss over these issues and I have no doubt in the coming months, just like RFC’s liquidation, Dave King’s previous crimes will be erased from memory.

Just listen to the start of that show last night again. They were talking about Dunfermline and the “worst case scenario” being liquidation. Talking about liquidation in it’s original form and definition before it happened to RFC. They then move on to Sevco – with the same club mentality – totally unbelievable guff.

I like Stuart Cosgrove and his views, but he wrote an article on here about “the dismal art of whataboutery”. Sorry but only in Scotland is there such a NEED for whataboutery. The double standards and hypocrisy shown by everyone from the SFA,Police, Parliament is astonishing. We have rules applying to everyone else but not to RFC/Sevco. We have Celtic fans getting jailed for pointing umbrellas at fans, yet 20,000 RFC fans singing “up to our knees in fenian blood” is a wonderful occasion.

It all truly beggars belief. So please before we start praising these churnalists and so forth, keep asking the questions. The MSM have distorted and revised events so dramatically in the last 2 years that we are in danger of letting them away with it.

  36. Ernie
I remeber there was mention of leaving the gate money split at 11-1
But if I recall correctly this was mainly just a talking point and nothing was set in stone
No matter what reason Aberdeen had for voting with Celtic I’m sure it was for the greater good of their own club
And as they say what’s done is done

  37. On Hampden…..since the millenium (off the top of my head) Dundee United, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, Hearts, Hibs, Livi, ICT, Ross County, Motherwell, Raith Rovers, Queen of the South, Dundee, Falkirk, St Mirren, Ayr Utd, Gretna, St Johnstone, have all played at the national stadium………quick quiz……how many had ‘their’ end covered? Do any of these teams even have ‘their’ own end in this ‘neutral’ stadium? How many of their fans whimper about it?

  38. Note to SFA on King’s fit and properness. Don’t worry about all that SA tax rubbish, according to the Record:
“That issue came to an end last year and King is now free to become a director”

. . . the presenters said that the Pars Fans did not want to mention the “L” word [Liquidation]

    why ?
    what’s so bad about LIQUIDATION?

LIQUIDATION means absolutely nowt, in fact, it should be the 1st option for any scottish football company
. . . it means you can DITCH the DEBT and carry on as if nothing happened – DEBT FREE !!!!

Perhaps the penny has finally dropped and that those who want to see Rangers survive and thrive going forward now realise that getting the spivs out is the only play left.

Given that the spics have had their feet under the table for some time, I would be surprised if their exit strategy is not in place and bullet proof.

Leaving the stage will come at a very high price – and is likely to cripple football activities down Ibrox way for some time to come.

If only substantially more sections of the media looked into this and spoke out earlier.

Indeed, in that context – Chic’s comments last night that Walter was not to blame [in terms of giving Green et al the sign of approval] is unforgivable.

Perhaps Rangers lost the battle for survival (long term) when the 5 way agreement was put in place?

  43. Sportsound last night: Tom English: “Now that his [Dave King] nightmare with the South African Revenue Service has come to an end, and let’s not beat around the bush, Chic is right, 45-44 million he had to pay, he admitted that he did not comply with his tax, and glib and shameless liar and all this stuff, that’s what he was denounced as, in a South African court. But that’s past, he’s now in the clear, all of that is done.”

Whew, thanks for clearing that up Tom ! I thought for a moment maybe Sevco might have been considering asking a tax cheat for money.

I thought English was quite cute with his comments. It was hardly a ringing endorsement of King. English’ main focus last night was on the mythical Walter, and what a myth 🙂

Oddly enough, Chico came across as a bit stand-off-ish on King too, and repeated something he had heard a long time ago about King ‘suddenly emerging’. He sounded almost like a conspiracy theorist for a few seconds — before he got back into the most outrageous Smith cheerleading mode yet recorded.

  45. ‘The Rangers end’…

Before we leave the topic can I just add that you guys have it all wrong.

‘The Rangers end’ came on 14 June 2012 when the CVA was rejected.

At least that was what Charles Green, Jim Traynor and Walter Smith said at the time.

Scottish Football needs a strong ‘Fit and Proper Person’ test.

To be fair I was so incensed by his initial endorsement of King I barely paid attention to the rest of it. His “nightmare”…….I mean ffs, imagine indulging in criminal activity, getting caught for it, and then having to pay back millions ?. It really must be a nightmare. It stuck in my craw as it was the typical “poor Rangers” stance we have been treated to since the tax case was revealed.

I’ve since been made aware of what English said about Smith and to be fair he’s spot on, but I couldn’t actually listen to it. Especially when Chic Young is in the other corner – it’s a no contest. The guys a clown.

English for me is a crafty one as well. He has the intelligence and ability to see through the revisionism and address it, but he is a master of playing the field. One week he is speaks the truth and writes a great article the next he aligns himself with the rest of the churnalistic guff. I think guys like himself and Spiers realise if they were to be really honest about it – they would blow things out the water. Threats and intimidation probably factor in as well. They both know they’ve got to make a living out of it – so they box clever. As I say some weeks they are insightful and write great articles the next week they leave their brains at the door a la Young, Keevins et al

  49. Just listened to Chic trying to stop the true tide of history coming in on Walter Smith by repeating “the debt was coming down” line and it was Walter who said the banks were running Rangers.

Chico if you are reading: it was Walter and SDM who gave the banks cause to run Rangers with their foolish spending in 2007/08. The latter made worse by the arrival of the £24m tax bill for EBTs in 2008 for which some provision should have been made.

All the supporting figures for Tom English’s Scotsman column are posted earlier at

    http://www.sfmonitor.org/2013/10/scottish-football-administration-in-the-21st-century/comment-page-12/#comment-68385

Rangers downfall started in 2007 when Smith was recalled by SDM to replace PLG and debt replaced EBTs as a method of funding Smith’s team and common sense was shown the door along with PLG.

    Nothing appears to have changed.

It’s a pity you missed the best bit — the ding-dong between English and Young, it was good stuff. I try to judge journalists & broadcasters on the entirety of their contribution. Taking the broadcast a whole, Tom English was excellent. The few ‘diplomatic’ lines he uttered on King seemed to me a way of quickly moving on to his main argument and focus — Smith. And from the entirety of English’s contribution over a long period I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t return to King, especially in light of the moveable SFA goalposts regarding fit and proper persons. Boxing smart as you say, or cute, as I would put it. Had he got stuck into both King and Smith he may have left himself open to accusations of being an obsessive Rangers hater — the term of choice used by those who don’t like staring facts in the face.

As for judging things in their entirety ?……..mate I’ve done this a long time ago. I simply don’t listen to it as a rule now. The MSM is agenda driven nonsense. Utter shameless dross. Whether it be Sportsound, Superscoreboard or the papers. I could’ve predicted the stance of both English and Young last night. I tuned in simply to confirm my belief that the MSM will give King an easy ride. I was right.

Not trying to come across as a clairvoyant/smart arse, but my contempt and distrust of the media can be traced back to June 2011 on the old RTC blog. This is how I predicted the MSM would act re new club and this was back in the day that liquidation wasn’t even considered – administrative receivership was the route http://rangerstaxcase.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/whyte-gets-ever-more-mysterious/comment-page-2/#comment-6952

Forgive me if I bristle a bit at your “judging things in their entirety” – I have had our MSM’s card marked a long time ago. Listening to Young and English’ whitter on last night would not tell me anything I don’t already know about them and their agenda

  52. I’ve just been reading around about Dave King, and came upon a piece from Alec Hogg of BDLive on 2nd September 2013. May be old hat to most of you, but I hadn’t seen it before.

    Here is an extract:
“…Not surprisingly, the spendthrift sparked the media’s attention, and tipped off the man who was to become King’s nemesis, the late Mr Chipps — a frumpy, seemingly distracted SARS-employed chartered accountant.

He was the closest person I’ve met to a real-life Columbo, the dithering TV detective who always got the criminal. Judged by his dingy office at the bottom of Jeppe Street in downtown Johannesburg, Mr Chipps was motivated solely by public service. And, until the media reported it as “Chris”, I never knew his first name. Nobody ever used it.

Mr Chipps had looked at King’s tax file. He was amazed at how someone earning so little could be buying so much. So, this unlikely detective started digging. The result was a series of court cases generating north of R400m in legal fees.

Mr Chipps built a case that resonated with Mr Justice Willie Hartzenberg, who opened his September 2002 judgment as follows : “Scotsmen are known to be thrifty. (King) is a Scot. He cannot be accused of squandering his money on the unnecessary payment of income tax.”

South Africa’s old-money families are disciplined. They may have yachts in Monaco, apartments in Mayfair and party up a storm in Manhattan. But while home in South Africa, they play down their wealth.

King, on the other hand, was brought up barefoot in a Glaswegian council project. The fifth of seven children sired by a policeman, he worked for Glasgow-headquartered Weir Group, a manufacturer of slurry pumps. Sent to then riot-torn South Africa in 1976, King grabbed the opportunity of a fresh start…..”

    I love the Colombo image.
I would like to think that there is someone in BDO that is busy being a Colombo, ready to ask little, last-minute, apologetic questions such as, ” … keep me right. Administrators are supposed to get the best deal for creditors, right?……and what was it you got … 5 and half million? On your own valuation of £40-odd million?..”

    11-1 vote

I think you will find their was No back door deal cut

That in fact Aberdeen voted with Celtic because of the dwindling numbers in traveling support over the last decade or so

Outside the old firm the biggest support coming to their ground was Dundee Unt
And with RFC(IL) kicked into touch
It made no sense for Aberdeen to hand over half their gate with ONLY 2 home games (against Celtic) were the away fans Could equal or out number the home support

Forgot to add LET The TDs commence
The truth that there is no big Conspiracy is sometimes hard to take

Eh? I think your recollection of it is slightly different from mine. It was made clear that gate-sharing wasn’t, and would never be, back on the agenda – which is why most observers were dumbfounded when Aberdeen voted with Celtic.

I don’t believe that any deal was struck with Celtic (just my opinion), but there must have been some unspecified self interest at work that would have resulted in Aberdeen voting for this – although it was still hilarious when the proposed change to that ridiculous league set up was blocked by the very same mechanism, and Milne etc. were going mental about it! If only they’d scrapped the voting structure when they had the chance, eh?

  54. It is perhaps time to reflect from another viewpoint. Initially I was amazed at the attempts by the current CEO to lure the South African version of Minty Moonbeams back into the fold. This amazement has subsided to one of delight! Another shameless crook on the Board is another step towards the abyss.

Thanks John, hadn’t seen that. The bit below made him a perfect fit at Murray’s Rangers 😮

  56. Just listened to the Sportsound podcast, and can’t quite get my head round the idea that Tom English has come across all that well. Yes, he correctly stated, but with not much emphasis, that both Murray and Smith were not blameless, but whenever he appeared to be going to back these statements up, he allowed the blustering Young to talk him down, without ever making a real attempt to discredit the buffoon. Young might have been talking mince (he undoubtedly was) but he barely let English get his point across. This either means that English is somewhat lacking in debating skills, or didn’t really want to force the issue. During their spat I had a picture in my head of the programme producer signalling to English to leave it and let Chick the Thick ramble on. Any journalist who couldn’t put together an argument, with only Young to argue with, that Smith is undoubtedly complicit in the mess TRFC are in, and RFC (IL) for that matter, either isn’t very knowledgeable, or doesn’t really want to win the argument. To me, English knows there are bodies buried out there, but doesn’t want to be the one to find and uncover them. He rightly criticises Smith for his backing of Green; pity he didn’t do that when Smith was involved. Still, he’s positioning himself nicely for a seat at the dinner table once the new incumbents, whoever they might be, are in power at Ibrox. He’ll also sit proudly at the top of the ‘I told you so’ league, though it would be better named the ‘I told you so long after it was well known’ league.

  57. So what we are saying now is that in Scottish Football we are headed for basically no ‘fit and proper person’ test or rule any more
    that is it ..Simples!
The media should just press the SFA to come clean and admit it just won’t exist any more if the latest moves in the pipeline at IBROX come to pass
We don’t know ..none of us for sure ..but there is no end of possibilities to the source of any funds that have already and may well now be invested in one of our clubs by the latest saviour.(and some others) .and we will never know!
Craig White who apparently has been banned by Regan is a choirboy I suspect by comparison and when not if the appointment goes through on a nod ,wink and gleeful smile from the SFA …..then
It is open season in our national sport.
Al Queda,Taliban,Somali warlords, Colombian drug barons Chinese triads….even the good old UK criminal underclass anyone with the money …In you come ..absolutely delighted to see you …just the kind of investor we are looking for…
Drugs, Gun Running, betting scams, slave trade.fraud, good old extortion…you name it ..no problem .we don’t want to know..we don’t care …come on down!

If I recall correctly, once the extension was built at the back of the Celtic end the capacity of that single terracing was 64,000 which is quite astonishing.

I watched my first ever Hampden game on it in May 1969 – the Cambuslang Rangers – Kirkintilloch Rob Roy Junior Cup Final.

As ever, my dad was late getting us there, we arrived about 8 minutes into the game and watched from the back of the Celtic end as the two sides seemingly played out a goal-less draw somewhere in the distance, in front of about 30,000 fans. Only when the final whistle went and the wee Rangers players started celebrating did we find out they’d scored in the first 5 minutes….. a happy memory

I should be amazed that the MSM are not slating the idea that a convicted tax evader might become involved with TRFC, even if you ignore the fact that RFC (IL) were tax evaders, and that he has previous with the club, but I’m not. Ignoring everything else, before he is even considered as a major investor, in any form, the SFA and MSM should be delving into the £20m investment he made in RFC, and the subsequent payment he received from MIH of £18m referred to in his SA tax case. £20m went in one door of the Murray Group, and £18m went out another. It looks, at best, to have been a vehicle for the transfer of £18m of RFC’s debt to MIH, with a discount of £2m for the brogues, blazer and share certificate (useful for hanging on a wall to cover stains). At the same time it would make RFC shares appear to be worth 9 times what they actually were, giving the bank comfort, and convincing the supporters happy times were ahead. If we use David Murray as the benchmark for real Rangers men, then King fits in quite snuggly.

A quick look at RM would seem to suggest that morality is pretty thin on the ground in Bearland. Mr King’s return is being viewed as the best thing since Mr Green / Mr Whyte / Mr Murray etc etc.

Hang on, there’s a bit of a pattern there, isn’t there?

  67. An insight, possibly, as to, (at least part,) of the reason

WHY, AT IBROX, THEY DO THINGS WHICH ARE AT ODDS WITH EVERYONE ELSE

“ People who make wrong doing a way of life are constantly angry.
They do not always show it, but inside they are seething at a world that,
from their perspective, does not give them what they are due.

Consider the wrongdoer’s overall mind set.

He regards the world as his own personal chess board with people and objects being his pawns.
He expects others to operate on his terms.

There is no room for Murphy’s Law (that if anything can go wrong, it will).
Wrongdoers generally regard anything that does not go their way
as a personal blow to their ever precarious self-esteem. (watp).

In the course of a day for all of us, something (usually a number of things) does not turn out as we expect .
We learn to cope with adversity responsibly, trying not to make a bad situation worse.

    Adversity provides challenges, sometimes opportunities.

This is not the wrongdoer’s perspective.

He perceives routine obstacles and frustrations as personal slights.
They challenge his view of himself as a person who is in always in control.
He internalizes any threat to his sense of entitlement and thereby remains angry at a world
that does not accommodate his unrealistic expectations.

That anger simmers inside, metastasizing like a cancer.
Eventually, the wrongdoer gives vent to his rage in one form or another.
The one frustration too much results eventually in a verbal outburst or in an eruption of violent behavior.
The offender lashes out at the person who got in his way , for example on the highway (“road rage”),
the individual who unknowingly offended him by a look, a gesture, or by uttering a particular word.
The least slight turns into a major issue.

The anger is always present. It takes little to unleash it.”.

Ibrox – a place where wrongdoing is a way of life.

I watched my first ever Hampden game on it in May 1969 – the Cambuslang Rangers – Kirkintilloch Rob Roy Junior Cup Final.
    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Kirkintilloch Rob Roy’s Tam Loughrin was my Latin teacher. Joe Fascione also played; his bro Vince was in our class at the time. But that was around 61/62 season. Just a thought, and a memory of past times.

  69. Alastair Johnston’s thinly veiled attack on Black Jack has garnered a very interesting thread on £ollow £follow.
I refer in particular to allegations of previous links between Whyte and (-S)DM in relation to Murray’s Carnegie Sports Group. (Eagle-eyed readers of RTC will remember the Tom Whyte/GM Mining links and Craig’s father-in-law’s steel interests)
This is new ground for FF and, although two years out of date, it might prompt further revelations about how ‘duped’ Murray really was.
As an aside – I remember hearing something about Whyte and Carnegie Sports, but I forget the exact details. However, it prompted me to dial in a couple of names into Google and within a few minutes got this nice little chain of connections:
Alastair “Surrender No” Johnstone , IMG board member.
Neil Hobday – Carnegie Sports International, CE of Loch Lomond Golf Club, ex IMG , ex Hurlingham Polo Association, now Guards Polo Club (Gary Withey is a member of the Hurlingham Polo Club)
Scott Murdoch – Bloo Knight and put up by McColl for the Rangers Board is also a director of the Loch Lomond Golf Club. (another director is also on the board of Close Leasing)

It could be that some Bears are beginning to see just exactly how Murray’s plot to dump Rangers and launder it back to the “Real Rangers Men” has been achieved.

Edit: And of course, Alastair Johnston’s first client @ AMG was Gary Player – who was in business with Dave King.

  70. I believe, having been told from a source whom I am aware engages in such circles, that gate sharing was not the only contentious decision facing the SPL at the time that the 11-1 was retained. 😉
