SFM – The Next Steps

As we all know, this site emerged from the ashes of RTC. The wish of the original administrator of the site, one which I wholeheartedly share, was to keep together the wonderful community RTC had built, in terms of both personnel and spirit. There are still many individuals around who were also part of RTC, and regrettably many who are no longer with us. The RTC spirit however, that of a cross-party football site where issues can be discussed in a respectful and insightful manner remains. The “wisdom of the crowd” phenomenon is also with us to perhaps an even greater extent than before, and consequently SFM’s credentials as a formidable alternative to the print media have grown.

In recent times, many contributors have expressed frustration that we are pretty much a talking shop and little else; characterised as “a lot of gum bashing and no teeth”. I think that is fair comment up to a point, but then again our aim – up to now – has been to simply present an alternative view – a view that has increasingly become the fan view as opposed to the industry view (the industry being made up of club officials, players, and press).

In fact the way I see it personally, SFM has evolved to a point where it has become the watchdog (monitor if you will) of an industry which is subject to very little oversight. The Rangers situation will eventually be done with (no laughing at the back please), and like everything else will be consigned to history (albeit more than one). The same self-interest and lack of regard for sporting integrity though will still remain, and the need for oversight will remain also.

Having arrived at those conclusions,  we have two alternatives; the first is to remain as we are (which is not a bad place to be), and the second is that SFM has to expand its role.

In recent weeks, the mods have met to discuss this, and we think that we ought to give the latter option a try. As to how we want to achieve that, and we have come up with a skeleton plan as follows;

1. We need to move into the area of gathering news content as well as commenting on what appears elsewhere;

2. We should act as a cross-club portal to get good fan site content from all clubs to a wider audience;

3. We need to highlight the positives in the game as well as the negatives;

4. We should become an actively campaigning body, aligning with fan groups to lobby for the changes we think important.

In order to achieve these objectives, more time will need to be spent on communication like podcasts, adding news content, expanding membership and building links with other fan groups. Time will also need to be spent  setting up features, attending press conferences etc. Later in the year, one of the mods will have much more time on his hands to help achieve this.

Podcasts, premium content, labour, organisation and all of the above costs money, and ultimately a subscription based model backed by sponsorship seems to be our best way of achieving that. In order to give us a head start, we will in the next few months be putting together a business-plan and a pitch for Crowd Funding investment.

This is not to say that our existing model has been a failure. We have successfully managed to keep ourselves afloat through the ad-hoc generosity of people in our community, although the inability to keep the podcasts going has been a bit frustrating. Finding income streams which are more solid will allow us to respond to events more quickly (for example mounting an ad campaign to respond to some event or other, or buying new equipment), and hopefully achieve all of our objectives – and build a bigger audience base for our message.

Of course a move of this nature will require that, in the interests of transparency, anonymity of SFM will have to be set aside. That will not affect any of our contributors, and our practice of using (sometimes) imaginative names on the blog will remain. However, for crowd funding to be successful, we will require to have a board in place, and there is no hiding place from Companies House. The make up of the board is also crucial, and in addition to consideration of blog members for that role, we will be looking to have respected people from without.

I imagine there may be a consequent subtle effect on moderation policy to take into account.

The reason I have made this post is to keep the community up to speed with events. Although we have decided to move forward to see if we can get support for our business plan, that plan is by no means finished. As I said earlier, the “wisdom of crowds” has made our community unique and given it its credibility. There’s a lot more wisdom out there we hope to tap into before we go ahead with our initiative.

We already had someone in mind for chairman of the new board, but events have conspired tragically to rob us of that – and had the effect of postponing this announcement. However we would like to hear suggestions for suitable outside candidates for board and committee places.

We also want to hear from you if you have a suggestion to be added to our wish list of SFM function above – or even if you think it is a mistake to embark on this course.

This is a very big move for SFM, so we don’t want to rush into anything. We need to listen to what you folks have to say, because if the merging SFM is not considered a better SFM by our community there is very little point in looking to fund it.

  1. scapaflow…you are awful… 😉

    Congrats to the Well.
Managed to watch online: good picture with no pop-ups or freezing on ‘stream2watch.com’.

Was surprised that there just didn’t seem to be a leader on the pitch for TRFC. Guessing that ‘Elbows’ was captain [?] but just no passion or fight on show, [Moshni aside 🙄 ].

With a full-time squad of eager, young professionals – who are also keen to establish themselves in the TRFC first team – should still do well next season. Just look at the Jambos.

Makes sense for McCall to stay as well: thought he actually did very well picking up the team and getting them this far. He deserves a full season at least, IMO.

Silver lining for TRFC ? At least McCoist won’t get a promotion bonus !

  2. BT sideline team of S. Craigen, D. Weir, and the anchor, whose name, my apologies, I cannot remember, looked absolutely choked at the result. The other team member Gordon Strachan, put them right on their nonsensical assessment that TRFCL had the better players.

I wasn’t surprised when D. Weir remarked that it would have been better for everybody if TRFCL had got promotion, predictable really.

Even weirder, S. Craigen then stated that rebuilding had to start immediately because players had to be let know if they were to be given the opportunity, aye, the opportunity, to sign for Rangers.

And I’d always thought he was sensible. The mask slipped I fear.

  3. Back to Rangers finances – how much will another season in the Championship cost them? Possibly £7M-£10M according to King himself.

Here is a transcript from an interview he did with Rangers TV on 21st May about future needs.

“I think I made a comment before that I think, about £30m I think will be the gap that shareholders will have to put in before we get there, in addition to the normal revenue streams coming into the club, before it becomes self sustainable. But if we were to miss a year, say in the Premier League, it could go up to 37 – 40. If things go really really well and we can change the commercial relationships it might go down to 25.”

    Taken from 3′ 20″ in:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk3lY83VV34

They can always console themselves that they will not have to pay out at least a couple of million in promotion bonuses and commissions.

  4. “What we saw today, what we’ve seen from Sevco this season, was an overdue exposure to reality.

It cracked open a door no-one really wanted to open, the front door of that big sprawling mansion in the cult classic movie The Money Pit, where Tom Hanks and Shelly Long buy a big, impressive looking house that is rotting from the inside.

That’s what Rangers was, and in trying to pretend that club survived liquidation it made sure that it’s all Sevco was going to be.

The money to “restore it” to the glory days isn’t there, and that’s partly because people still haven’t grasped that it was never really there in the first place. The “glory days” were a product of one man’s giant ego and one bank’s criminal largesse and once that was at an end a readjustment in the club’s stature was always going to come.”

  5. I know that there are commentators on SFM who rightly feel that they and their clubs were cheated out of trophies and European places by the SDM years and there is a great temptation to celebrate today’s play off victory for the Well as a result of hubris and karma

But we should not forget the many ordinary fans of Rangers, some who post on here, who have seen their club laid low by a series of incompetent owners, starting with SDM himself. They have been failed by those who were supposed to be the guardians of their club.

Worse, they have been failed by those who were supposed to be the Guardians of the game. Who have at times been both complicit in or compliant with the mismanagement of Rangers.

Rangers were once a sporting giant. Unless DK has a giant rabbit to pull from the hat it is hard to see much of a future.

Tonight I offer my congratulations to Motherwell and their supporters but have no wish to rub anyone’s nose in the failure of their team.

  6. What a fantastic week I have had in Scotland for the Cup final. First in Inverness to enjoy the build up then down in Glasgow for the final. Fly back to Oz tomorrow, all I can say is I have never seen armaggedon look so good. Todays result was icing on the cake.

  7. Motherwell 3 – 0 Rangers

    Motherwell 3 – 0 Rangers

    Match report
    As it happened
    Reaction
    Man-of-the-match

    Phil McGhee Fir Park

Motherwell rounded off an indifferent season with a stunning double win over Rangers for a sensational 6-1 play-off aggregate and ensure their Premiership safety.

Similar to the performance at Ibrox in the first leg, ‘Well contained Rangers for the first half hour before controlling the game and the three second half goals from Marvin Johnson, Lionel Ainsworth and substitute John Sutton erased any faint thoughts of a remarkable Rangers’ recovery.

And while previous end of season celebrations have coincided with European qualification, the Fir Park players and fans thoroughly enjoyed the relief of a fairy tale finale after the final whistle.

Stevie Hammell and Stephen Pearson were both declared fit allowing Baraclough to start with the same eleven and tactical line-up which served ‘Well so superbly at Ibrox.

Before this second leg tie the pre-match debate was on the importance of the first goal and whether Motherwell’s intentions would be to defend their two goal advantage.

With Keith Lasley sitting between two banks of four across the ‘Well half of the pitch, Rangers were given plenty of outfield possession. Apart from a Kris Boyd header which was comfortably held by George Long and volley wide from the recalled ‘Gers striker there were few goal threats.

Having weathered the early pressure from the visitors for the first 30 minutes and amidst a storm of summer hailstones, ‘Well then applied some sustained pressure on Cammy Bell’s goal.

The first threat came when Lionel Ainsworth raced down the right but his low cross along the six yard area was just beyond the inrushing Scott McDonald.

Three minutes later Louis Long, in the opposing box for a corner, played in Lee Erwin who turned and slashed his shot narrowly across thee face of goal.

Motherwell sensed a crucial goal was on the cards and Johnson’s cross found McManus unmarked but his low header was off target.

The first half ended with ‘Well threatening and Johnson came with inches when he accepted a pass from McDonald at the edge of the box before curling a left foot effort wide of the diving ‘keeper and his left hand post.

The all important first goal duly arrived seven minutes after the restart and it was a disaster for the Rangers’ ‘keeper and his side’s slim chances of promotion.

Johnson, whose pace caused problems all afternoon, evaded a couple of tackles as he headed towards the visitor’s box. Although his powerful shot took a wicked deflection off Maruis Zaliukas to spin high in the air, Bell should have dealt with it under his cross bar but the’keeper’s punch sent the ball over his shoulder and into the net.

That effectively killed the tie but it also knocked the stuffing out of the Ibrox side who threw former ‘Well man Lee McCulloch forward to try and rescue something from the game.

While it made little impression on the home goal with Long without a single second half save, the visitor’s rearguard looked exposed and it was no surprise when the Fir Parker’s added a second goal to make sure of a memorable second win over Rangers.

This time Johnson was the architect with a storming 60 yard run from his own half before rolling the ball across the box for Ainsworth to once again drill the ball past Bell to make it 2-0.

‘Well had chances to add a third as ‘Gers committed six players to attack but had to wait until injury time to round off the scoring. Erwin was clipped in the box by Lee Wallace and John Sutton calmly stroked home the resultant penalty for his 13th goal of the season and emphatically secure Motherwell’s win and leave ‘Well fans looking forward to next season in Ladbrokes Premiership.

  8. Rangers were ‘Well done (sorry) over the two legs, but let’s remember the bigger picture, Rangers just stiffed Mike Ashley for 5 million quid, the loan fee was only payable on promotion…

Just turned on sky sports news
    To see this headline

    Rangers Denied Promotion

Are they serious? Or at the complete wind up?

    Unbelievable :slamb:

    ____________________________________________

There are alot of very decent bears out there.
Some of them in Inverness even.

Having turned this wee Hampden trek into a weekend long jaunt, I was listening to the commentary of Today’s game on BBC Shortbread driving up the A9.

Now it may have been static (you may or may not know the joys of having to keep switching between MW and FM to keep any sort of signal coming through the Drumochter pass) but there did seem to be quite alot of breaking up and whining when I was listening to Derek Ferguson’s very one sided commentary.

But then a vision came to my minds eye as I surveyed the magnificent scenery of Dalwhinnie and surroundings, of what would be happening at that very time in Inverness City Centre.

    There would be pubs.
There would be Bears in some of those pubs.
They would be watching the same game I was listening to.
Meanwhile, outside in easy earshot, the streets would be thronging with jubilant ICT fans rejoicing as the Scottish Cup was paraded through the town, expressing unrestrained joy, whilst completely oblivious to these bears suffering.

Ouch. That’s gonna a be a sore one for them bears to take.
Now some of ’em probably had it coming, no mistake, and I permit myself a wry smile at that thought.

But by no means all of them. I feel for them.

But there are ups and down in Football.
And as in life, the downs are as much of it as the ups.

I just hope more of the Bears take losing in the manner that the brave men of Falkirk did, rather than in the manner of that spoilt bairn Moshni.

Because today was potentially important in how we all move forward.

One of the biggest problems with the whole TRFC saga thus far has always been the manner of their placement in the league. This was not of their choosing and not to their liking.

Bears saw themselves as unfairly relegated. And they saw themelves in this light in a large part because the particular media lens that is trained upon the game in scotland supports this view. They view themselves as benefactors to an ungrateful and churlishly jealous constituency of other clubs. The particular media lens that is trained upon the game in scotland validates this view to a great extent.

Almost everyone else (myself included) sees TRFC as the scion of an institution being unfairly favoured by being given preferential admission to a league set up that their predecessor had forfeited any right to be part of, by dint of horrendous financial impropriety that was simply deliberate and contrived cheating – in both a sporting and a wider sense.

Such generous treatment (the pretence of continued existence) would not have been afforded to my club or its successor in the same circumstances. And the self same media lens was used to distort the extent and seriousness of the corruption they engaged in at every opportunity that presented itself.

Well today, TRFC were once again placed into a league that was not of their choosing and is probably not to their liking.

But they find themselves where they are now on the basis of sporting merit alone. This time there is no such controversy.

Both sets of divided opinion should now be able to agree that TRFC are where TRFC deserve to be (whilst still disagreeing about ‘who’ TRFC ‘is’ )

That is a foundation upon which bridges can be built.

And if their ‘rightful’ place turns out to be a little lower than they first thought or expected, well, not to worry. I can think of many great examples of clubs not accepting their allotted station and dragging themselves upwards accordingly.

There is a mindset and a set of behaviors that goes along with this.
    And it can be learned.

And in their case, it needs to be.

  10. Well, well done the ‘well.

I look forward to an expanded top flight division next year. Come on Mr Doncaster, don’t keep us waiting, you know you want to. Just come out and say it!

  11. Here is a view from someone who actually had a view. Not too sure about bringing et another player in to it but he saw it I didn’t,
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Utterly phenomenal few days!! never have I celebrated goals like I did today!! Just watched the full game again on BT sport and as big Erwin put it in his interview…..”We battered ’em”

Huge credit to Baraclough, he showed total balls the way he put out the team at Ibrox and he showed great tactical know how today, cos I have no doubt if McCall was in charge of us during this play off we’d be in the Championship next year!!

I had a great view of the incident at the end as it was right in front of us, Big Erwin was not at fault imo, apart from a wee bit of petulance with the shove, he looked in total shock when that f*kin idiot went ape at him!! was delighted with wee Ainsworth tho who waded in immediately….i’m actually pretty sure he managed a right hook on Moshni as well!!

As for the flare on the park, I believe it was a h*n sitting a few rows from the front, I was told he chucked it and bolted out along with a few of his fellow unwashed after Marvins goal!!

Some of the bile allowed In the Main stand today was unacceptable, I don’t care what the media or our bank manager says, the longer these bigoted dinosaurs remain out of the top flight and out of our stadium, the better for everyone concerned!!

Sorry for all what may seem vitriol, but what next?

  14. I did spot a very diconscerted looking Murrey P at half time on BT sport, would have mentioned it at the time but was getting very merry and still am.
John chuck us a yak my beers depleted.

  15. Its amazing game football. When Ainsworth signed for the well a mate who follows Aldershot said he blows hot an cold mostly useless.
So what is it about managers that manage to get these guys producing great performances ?

  16. /Oh meant to say Dave how much and when.
And are you now going to sack the only manager you have?

  17. Resin

I to was listening to the so called commentary on radio Scotland

Tuned in 10 minutes into the game and honestly thought TRFC had already scored the way they were going on

When I got home turned on my kodi and SS news to be met with a headline
That to my amazement did not congratulate or even say Motherwell had won the play off
But told me TRFC had been Denied promotion

The good and bad situation for both clubs will now be most apparent over the next week or 2

The good…. Motherwell being able to plan for next year signing targets etc
And more importantly being able to renew contracts of up and coming hopefull young men still in development 16,17,18,19 year olds

The bad how many young men and woman are now going to be told their services are no longer required on and off the field at TRFC

It’s the world famous St Etienne racing bike presented to Rangers as a gift following a game against them in 1957. Rangers gave the French side a miner’s lamp in return.

The only surprise was that Craig Whyte didn’t try to sell it on ebay or down the Barras

  20. Morning all. I’ve just read the plaintiff cry of Graham Spiers on Twitter say the sooner Rangers are back in Scotland’s top-flight the better. In the interest of fairness he does extend his congratulations to Motherwell. By now though it is clear that Rangers in the top league would only be ‘better’ for Rangers. Clubs are not going to the wall and are surviving without their presence. Many clubs have witnessed an increase in fans, and I have to say some of the travelling supports I saw at Celtic Park last season were noticeably higher. So what do Graham Spiers and others actually think might be ‘better’ if Rangers were present? Okay, every club would get two visits from their large travelling support but is that a reason alone? The TV contract would not be increased by several millions on their entry. The league has just announced a new sponsor so presumably no scope there either. In terms of the empty banks of seats debate in some games they still existed when a Rangers was there – that is a fact. So it would be more appropriate for Graham Spiers and others to say it would be great for Rangers to get promoted, and also for us because Rangers are our favourite team. People sometimes don’t like blunt answers because it doesn’t suit them, but in this case I wish they would just be honest.

There’s a “Team” at 113 called “Glasgow Rangers”

As their records go back to the 2010/11 season, they’re definitely in Liquidation. 🙂

    Thanks Sann

Why then does it appear that UEFA are continuing to ‘award’
    “Glasgow Rangers” c/e points since 2011/12 ?

  23. Ewan Murray’s Guardian article only marred by….

    Eye’s down for today’s MSM Bingo 🙂

    No 1. “….once dominant club….”

    No 2. “…..return to the top division….”

No 4. “Dave King, the lauded Rangers chairman….”

From reading on here previously, the consensus was that the points “awarded” since 2011/12 relate to the Scotland national coefficient.

No idea why. You’d have to ask Kassiesa / UEFA that.

  25. I actually think Spiersey is absolutely right. A cleaned up (songwise) rejuvenated youthful sustainable RFC* would benefit the top flight assuming their entry was by vitue of genuine effort and achievement. As others have said the benefit to RFC* would dwarf the benefit accrued by other clubs, probably collectively.

Now I’ll take RFC* poff the hot seat, caight as they are now in a viscous spiral albeit more than arguably of their own making. So what have they, the MSM, tried to do achieve that? Trust and it will be thus? Hows that going then?

My two tails wagging today, and they are, are nothing to do with RFC*. They are everything to do with the sycophantic lamb ridden excuse for a media that we have in this country that have now seen their favourite ‘source’ cast into the wilderness (their term on sunday morning for the championship, not mine) for another season. Shame on all of them but they truly do deserve whats coming, especially if King as we suspect is all mouth.

  26. I’m a bit surprised by the lack of solidarity for big mad Moshni. I’m pretty sure I recently heard TRFC fans sing that they were the Billel Boys.

    /////////////

It’s to do with the coefficient
It is calculated over 5 years
Any team from any country which has played in UEFA competition stay on and gather points for said country over the period whether they are still in existence or not

Points are awarded to every country
The amount depending on how that countries teams are preforming in UEFA competition

So with Glasgow Rangers(IL) having played in UEFA competition within the last 5 years they are awarded and accumulate the points awarded to Scotland’s coefficient

Does that answer your question Jim

PS check in 2 years time to see if they are still on the list and gathering points

As after 5 years of non participation they or any other club drop off the list
    Gretna Unirea etc

    —————————————

Indeed, by a bizarre coincidence, Unirea Urziceni were ranked 113th in 2014, and were still accumulating the default Romanian coefficient points, despite having gone out of business in 2011.

The outstanding question of whether Rangers would have been awarded the original Rangers’ coefficient points, meagre though they would have been after 2010-11 had dropped off, will most likely now never be resolved.

  30. What a weekend!

Thank god it is Monday and I can get my breath back a bit.

    Talk about Armageddon!

This is what happens when you have a sixth birthday party in the house…
    🙂

So after the zillion weans were safely returned to their mammies and daddies, possible sugar overdosing notwithstanding, we spent a few hours kicking back with the extended family.

This includes my brother in law (BIL), a great guy that I love to bits, who was raised as a Rangers fan in the so-called glory years of Murray’s madness.

To be fair, we have pretty much stopped talking about football these days. No animosity whatsoever, more a sort of mutual embarrassment.

So yesterday we were all sitting around having a chat and surreptitiously checking the score on the mobile phones.

Eventually Motherwell score their first and the news filters through.

The BIL’s reaction? Tired, jaded disappointment. No real surprise. Just another nail in the coffin. Another little spark of hope extinguished.

As he says, he didn’t really expect to get through, and the continuing omnishambles has left him numb – barely interested anymore. If they got their act together and behaved with some dignity he could envisage a return, but as it is, it is mainly just an on-going source of embarrassment.

I asked him what he thought were the chances of the club reversing its fortunes with the financial situation being sown up as badly for them as it apears to be?

His answer said it all for me.

He hasn’t attempted to follow the financial shenanigans. He sees headlines about Mr King or A.N.Other “saviour” coming to their rescue in the media and is pretty much waiting for that to happen.

I outlined (as gently as possible) a couple of the major financial problems that they currently face and there was only a tired shake of the head and move off to another conversation.

Right there is Rangers biggest problem.

Guys like the BIL are being turned off day by day. It is getting harder and harder for them to associate with the stinking embarrassment that is currently playing out of Ibrox.

As they lose guys like this they will be reduced to a rump of hardcore that will concentrate the bile and hatred, making the club ever more toxic to the rest of us.

    And who is to blame?

The Murrays and Kings and Greens and Whytes of this world are just spivs and chancers who spot the opportunity to milk the fans and are ruthless enough to do it whilst wrapping themselves in the flag.

The Scottish Football Association was there to stop this happening to the game and have failed miserably – mainly because they too could not resist the temptation to try to milk the same fans.

And of course there was the Scottish media, guardians of civic society, cheering on any wideboy claiming to have off-theradar wealth or a severe case of Rangersitis. They too could not resist the temptation to continue to get their daily dose of the blue pound.

The truly ironic thing, the almost Shakespearean / Greek tragedy thing, is that the only people telling them the truth were their so-called “enemies”.

    Message to the Rangers fans:

With friends like those, you really need “enemies” like us.

Unfortunately (for guys like the BIL) I have absolutely no idea how they can get out of ther current predicament. A liquidation event (you know, a real one) followed by starting from scratch might do it, but the resistance to this is massive on so many fronts. I don’t see it happening.

As others have said, a million times by now, this leaves them skewered by their own hubris.

There can be no “return” to the glory days from beyond the grave.

The BIL watches the English footie now and says he is into the tennis (with a big ironic grin). We had a good chat about the Warriors doing well too, while our kids were out the back chucking a rugby ball about. Signs of the future.

  31. Saw this mmmm
Lets watch crowds dwindle again in the SPL. This year they were on average 5000 down per club. Scottish football is bankrupt without the Rangers. TV money will not come for a one sided league full of meaningless fixtures. The biggest crowds of the season next year will be rangers v hibs

  32. Did Mohsni get a PR bonus for that performance?

Best squirrel ever for the MSM to focus on – avoiding analysis of the burning issues:

    a) King’s investment plans

    b) warchest, squad replacement – which King said would be the same promotion or not

    c) manager replacement – Klopp, Moyes, McClaren

Don’t Celtic play Hearts next season ?

  34. Good lord. Could this be the start of the awakening? So I take it from the above that they don’t want to be in a one sided league full of meaningless fixtures? They’d rather it was ultra competitive with Hibs, presumably St Mirren, Falkirk, QoTS and all the rest.

There may be hope yet. Or alternatively, when they’re sitting sixth in January and the reconstruction safety blanket hasn’t yet been rolled out they’ll scream for big money signings to Get them Telt as I believe Walter used to say.

  35. Is this new regime project all going a bit Pete Tong for King – like his SARS adventure – but remember he turned that around big time into an amicable settlement – result !

  36. I seem to be out of step with the SFM populace – I agreed with boywithoutanaitch’s summary of the scuffle, with blame being apportioned to Motherwell whilst not excusing Mohsni’s overreaction. I guess the red cards were allocated as the incident was seen from the pitch.

And I got more thumbs down that usual for my little jibe about the much-discussed Ashley loan deal. Probably because I multiplied it by 10x to £5m. I guess I’m just not used to there not being billions and millions discussed whe it come to Rangers…

But the fact remains that Rangers will have to rebuild their squad with all those poverpaid veterans leaving. They will be able to use their hyper-expensive “academy” guys and a smattering of veterans they can buy-in or get on free-transfers, but the heart (sic) of the team will have been ripped out.

Can they hire a coach, replace departees and build a new playing philisophy turn it around in a matter of only a couple of months? Pretty sure Hibs and QoTS will fancy their chances to repeat their campaigns, given the bulk of their teams are intact and their respective coaches will have a year under their belts.

Having seen how Deila struggled to impose his will on an existing squad at the start of the season (as did LeGuen!), whoever takes on the Rangers job will at least have a new squad but equally he’ll need them to gel in pretty short order as losing a few games early will put real pressure on…

  37. And what about Ashley this morning? Gutted he missed out on his £500,000 promotion bonus or grinning from ear to ear that King’s mess just got a whole lot messier. Next event – EGM – 12th June.

  38. mcfc @ 11.40am

Yup. And that cost him many many millions that he’ll never see back as well.

Stuart McCall: “It’s for the club to decide but my three biggest strengths as a manager are recruiting people, as I did here at Motherwell, getting the best out of people and improving people,” he said. “That’s certainly three things Rangers will need next season.”
    ———————————————————-
Surely that’s just two things, are ‘improving’ and ‘getting the best out of’ not essentially the same? The third thing they need is presumably the money they were told they would be getting.

Who can TRFC attract as manager? McCall obviously wants it, but their fans seem to be very much against it, and is Felix McGath still floating about somewhere behind the scenes? What they seem to need is one who can build up a team over time, but the expectations weigh very heavily against that. It’s been a graveyard for young players (Templeton anyone?) over the last couple of seasons, would a promising young manager be any different?

Gary Costello, Surrey • 5 hours ago The day that ‘The Journey’ became ‘The Detour.’

Ian congrats on the win yesterday and staying put.

Great detour comment – Used to play in Surrey Saturday and Sunday league teams with 3 Costello’s. Given their background not surprising our Sunday team played in green shirts and shorts but the keeper played in blue – yeah I was outnumbered but whatever the performance it didn’t stop “effin jock” often being heard around the Surrey pitches.

As for the team that plays at Ibrokes it is hard to understand why (other than supporting their team) people want Pretendygers in the Premiership because on this season’s performances [not to mention half the team needing changed and no manager yet signed up for 2015-16] a relegation struggle would almost certainly result as would a few one sided fixtures. Far from pulling fans and sponsors in it would probably chase them away. Am sure Ladbrokes (any relative of Ibrokes??) will go with what they have as, I am sure, will Hibs, QOS, Falkirk, St Mirren and the rest of the Championship.

The ever diminishing war chest has yet to be seen and with the current squad inadequate for both football and boxing the future is certainly not looking bright. Add to that MA has still not finished with them so the EGM and the close season could well be interesting – I presume the 5 loan players have already made their way home?

  41. Congratulations to ICT on their fine win in the Scottish Cup Final, and to Falkirk for providing such a spirited display. Well done, too, to Motherwell for retaining their Premiership status. I was unable to view any of the play-offs, but a 6-1 aggregate win suggests it was well earned. What’s the record score for this play-off final?

I did, at first, think the play-off result showed a huge gap between the Premiership and the Championship, much to my dismay 😥 , but then I realised the gap between Falkirk, fifth in the Championship, and ICT,3rd in the Premiership, wasn’t that great after all 😀 So things look a bit better for the Jambos next season than taking the play-off in isolation. 😉

On the ludicrous claims from the ‘experts’ yesterday that Motherwell shouldn’t have been so overjoyed at their win; it’s the same every year when a club avoids relegation in the last game; been there, done it. I’ve never before heard criticism of any ‘relegation avoidance’ celebrations, in fact, more often than not, the joy of the players and the supporters is commented on in a very positive manner by pundits on both sides of the border.

  42. Just a wee side issue.

Listened to yesterdays game on the radio and mention was made of a flare getting chucked onto the park.

My immediate and stereotypical thoughts, given past occurrences, was that will be the men from Govan were at it again.

However TV highlights appear to show and say the flare came from Motherwell fans. Just goes to show one shouldn’t jump to conclusions and that all clubs have the potential to have a few idiots amongst their numbers.

Similarly I believe an end of season pitch invasion has become a recent tradition at Fir Park. Perhaps the club should have been a bit more aware of the potential consequences of one yesterday and put out a stronger stewarding presence or better tactics come the final whistle.

  43. Would the SFA/SPFL really be stupid enough and corrupt enough to propose league reconstruction to help out their favourite club now – in light of the FIFA scandal and The Rangers’ dire performance against the second worst team in the Premiership? Surely such a move would be public self-harming on an epic scale. Regardless of what the Five Way Agreement says – are The Rangers effectively on their own now – “Sorry mate – did everything we could – but things have changed – and you didn’t keep up your end of the deal – maybe another time – see ya round – take care”.

In fact, could Motherwell have delivered the coup de grace to the The Rangers project for the SFA/SPFL and ushered in a new era of more balanced, self-conscious governance for Scottish football?

    ……………

Ian, I was driving home on Sunday listening to talk sport when they cut across to the game at Fir Park to speak to their man at the game…who happened to be English ,,can’t remember his name…however his summary of the game at half time was it livened up after about 30 minutes, with Motherwell having had 2 good chances to The Rangers 1…and The Rangers should have had 2 red cards but the ref decided to show leniency???…

Did not see the game so not sure on the accuracy of that statement…but the reporter did seem to have a fairly balanced and it would appear honest view of the game in general…

  45. yesterday was like being told on the last day of your school holidays that you have another years holiday. It was that good.
Fair play to Motherwell, let no one ever mention again about Motherwell being a Sevco friendly club.
A word about the manager Ian barraclough. Ian was the manager of Sligo Rovers from 2012 onwards he was regarded as the ‘Bit-O-Red’s’ most successful manager ever, winning several trophies. Most importantly of all he was a gentleman. Who ever said ‘nice guys come second’

Wholly agree. The comments on the radio coverage with regard to the Motherwell reaction was indeed bizarre. Due to the previous dominance of the big Glasgow 2 a good number of other 10 top flight teams have dabbled with the fear of relegation and the fan’s celebrations after managing to stay up are understandable. It is of course a reaction of pure relief as opposed to some form of twisted acceptance that all is OK with the club. Well fans will be waking up today with a clear head knowing they have dodged a bullet and will be seeking news on how the club is going to avoid such a situation happening next year. They will however be able to accept that it could easily happen again.

However that may not be the case down Govan way where minds will be muddled once again by the journey hitting buffers one stop too early. The sense of entitlement is still masking the reality of where the club finds itself and the hard and honest graft that is required to right the ship.

Until the MSM and some pundits really get to grips with that I can’t see things improving and we will continue to see the efforts and actions of others belittled because, for some reason, they are not worthy.

  47. I wonder what it feels like today for a life-long Rangers supporter, who remembers the Cup Winners Cup victory and a great many league title wins. Who, like all other supporters, embraced the ‘same club’ mantra. I wonder if, in a more enlightened moment, he will wonder if what he witnessed yesterday is a team he is proud to call ‘Rangers’, or will he come to the conclusion, ‘that’s not Rangers, Rangers could never be that bad!’ Will the time come when the more thinking of their number will not want TRFC to be ‘Rangers’? They might not be there yet, but unless something happens to lift their spirits, like the delivery of a true blue warchest, then surely that day must come!

  48. Police Scotland have announced they are investigating the finding of what can only be described as five rubber, wax, lookalike face masks, of the type seen in the film Mission Impossible. The five masks, all found in a dustbin outside Fir Park last night were said to be a striking resemblance to some players from Motherwell Football club and are looking into the possibility that some players were not who they said they were. Eye witness accounts tell of how Keith Lasley, Stephen mcManus, Scott McDonald, Stuart Pearson and Bilel Moshni were all seen leaving the ground together late on and “disappearing” tout-suite up a close only for Bobby Charlton, Lou Macari, Steve Coppell, Martin Buchan and Jimmy Greenhoff to appear, coincidentally, from Lou Macari’s Aunties house after a flying visit.
Police are looking into any connections regarding these groups of people and whether any recent links are to be found between the two clubs that may explain the disgraceful scenes earlier in the day. Anyone with information should contact their local Police Office. The masks are not for sale!!

  49. Senior – Who ever said ‘nice guys come second’

If I remember the reason the Well were in the play-off was because he came “second last”?

Seriously though he got the players up for the games and got his tactics spot on. All he needs to do now is improve for next season so they do not face the same play-off problem, or Pretendygers, again.

  50. The BIL post is excellent and I am sure others will have similar experiences I certainly do.

Detour? Perhaps more of a cul de sac ( to say a dead end would be tasteless so I will keep that to myself)

Rangers denied promotion could be to do with it being to late for reconstruction next season, I need to watch that cynicism…

  51. The criticism of the Motherwell fans exuberance should also be taken in the context of this being the first win/s against a team called Rangers playihg out of Govan for 11 1/2 years (!). Is that stat right? 39 games without a Motherwell win?

That’s cause for celebrations of VE Day proprotions just for the win, let alone the context…

At 79 minutes live on BT Sport, Stuart McCall is clearly heard and seen telling the officials to F&%k Off. I have emailed the SPFL, SFA and BT Sport to bring this to their attention. #notholdingmybreath

What would life have been like had David Murray never got his hands on Rangers? They would still have won trophies but almost certainly not nine in a row league titles. They almost certainly would never have got involved in questionable tax avoidance schemes which put the club at risk. I’m sure they would have ended the sectarian signing policy many years ago just like Murray did. I’m sure they would never have suffered liquidation and the same Rangers would still be competing in the top league. Would life for your average Rangers fan really be that bad had Murray never darkened the front door of Ibrox? Personally I don’t think so.

  55. Shouldn’t someone prepared to spend upward of £40,000,000 on his boyhood team have stood up by now to offered some leadership and hope to his customers and future shareholders.

Mr King, silence in such adversity is not dignity it is lack of leaderhsip and courage.

“King, where are your people now?
    Chained and pacified.
Tried in vain to show them how.
    And for that you died.

You had a dream of a promised land.
People of all nations walking hand in hand
But they’re not ready to accept
    That dream situation, yet.”

  56. I think the biggest thing to come out of yesterday was the scales falling from the eyes of Scottish football. For years the ‘diddy’ clubs were told that we were utterly reliant on the Old Firm, we should be grateful for their gracing us with their presence.

We are now in an era of No Rangers, and of Celtic’s away support dwindling, and yet clubs have survived. They’ve had to make cuts along the way, but they are now sustainable and well run. Long gone are the days of the likes of Killie handing over 3/4 of their ground to Old Firm fans, and giving up any sort of ‘home’ advantage in return for short term cash.

It says a lot that the Media went mental over Motherwell daring to leave a half stand empty, rather than give up this advantage, because it said a lot more than upsetting a few away fans – it said ‘You know what? We don’t need your charity, thank you’. It said that clubs don’t need to rely on ‘crumbs from their master’s table’, and that they could stand on their own two feet, and the media DO NOT like that. Having spent the last 3 years telling us how much we need Rangers in the top division, for a club to so publically turn around and disagree with that assessment must have stung!

  57. I’m fairly certain I heard Stuart McCall, in two maybe three separate interviews, state quite unequivocally that he hadn’t seen the incident involving Moshni. However unless it’s a quirky camera angle the picture in Roddy Forsyth’s article, in The Telegraph – link on previous page, seems to show McCall was well aware of the incident… curious.

  58. Is it fair to say that without one of Ashley’s ‘loaners’, The Rangers would probably have not even made the play-offs – let alone the final? Unless cash is available to replace that quality of goal scorer and attract a few more of similar calibre – will next season be another journey without a map. The problem has never been more clearly defined – spend extravagantly to attract quality players and back room staff to a very unattractive career move or find your natural level in mid table, second tier obscurity – because that’s where your net revenue dictates you belong.

    ————-

There were a lot of shell-shocked pundits on both stations yesterday. A couple of them sounded a wee bit bitter. It was all about how the team from Ibrox had failed, and then a grudging, ‘Auch aye, but Motherwell played two good matches. Now about that bust up…’.

Having listened to Motherwell being written off for quite some time, and premature talk about how the top tier would look next season with Ibrox, it was a huge result and I’m not surprised at the joy. Even us neutrals were lappng it up, especially since many folks from these towns disown their local club to big it up as glory hunters.

I like the idea of some kind of play-off trophy for the winner that’s been mentioned. There was definitely a cup-final type of atmosphere about the tie just as there was at Easter Road last year. Great drama. Would a promotion play-off shield or the like not be a good thing?

Ian Barraclough does come across as a very well-spoken chap. Sharp dresser on the touchline annaw. Be very interesting to see what he can achieve next year.

    ///////////////././/.

Just spoke to 2 such people/
1 a current season ticket holder

Unfortunately both seem to think they will be running on a younger fitter and hungrier team next season
    Not a bad thing

But this team will be made up of all the best young talent from across Europe and beyond
    Of course all funded by DK’s million’s 🙄 .

When I asked how they were going to identify and attract these players with no scouting network
1 the guy with the season ticket tried to change the subject

The other said we’re rangers and everybody knows who these players are They are at the big clubs for a reason and they know they can advance their career’s with the publicity of playing at a club like us

For some there is just no hope 😕

  61. I severely doubt the new teams ability to survive another season. Relying on season ticket cash, this pool of cash will be depleted with the fans openly asking DCK, where’s his money? The bears are hurting and they’re going to make sure DCK is held to his word. The three bears cannot subsidise this entity for ever and more of the same this term, will not be acceptable.

Meantime, Celtic have signed a new player for pennies and if he shows anything, he will have a sell on value. The new club have many out of contract players but who would pay substantial amounts for them. An odd one maybe around £500,000 but that would be it, with the footballing side deeply weakened.

Motherwell are guaranteed another season in the premier which should help their coffers and with Hearts coming up with their youngsters, it should make for an interesting season. If the new team survive the season, would it be feasible that they may fail to go up again. Hibs only really got going half way through the season so should be favourites for that title.

So it’s congrats to Motherwell and Hearts and commiserations to Hibs and the new team. Maybe next year…..or maybe not, as the case may be.

  62. When Celtic secured the title they could fully focus on next season. Aberdeen minds were on 2015/16 as soon as they secured runners-up spot, weeks ago (1pt from 12 in the last four fixtures). ICT had the cup final but they also knew about Shinnie’s departure ages ago and I doubt that has gone unaddressed. And so on. At Ibrox? Manager, budget, squad, funding – all up in the air. Pre-season starts •next month•. Aberdeen and St Johnstone will be playing competitive games again on 2 July, a calendar month from •tomorrow•. Even if King suddenly finds enough cash to pay the bills and acquire a Hearts-quality squad in a matter of weeks, results before Christmas would surely be ropey as everything beds in. They don’t make it easy for themselves.

  63. Also, Aberdeen, ICT, Ross County, both Dundee clubs, St Johnstone and a resurgent Hearts in the top tier. ‘Mon the East Coast. No wonder Celtic’s travelling support is down 😉

We all know that there’s a very unbalanced bias towards one club in all areas of the media, but if we accept it as inevitable, it shouldn’t be, surely it couldn’t be too hard to find people who can at least try, once there’s nothing they can do to change matters, be a bit more magnanimous. Listening yesterday, it was clear that those of a neutral bent were almost drowned out – even though they were the most articulate, by a very long mile. What can be going through the program producers’ minds that they allow this to happen? It’s not as if these guys slavering away actually adds anything to the listener’s, or viewers, enjoyment or enlightenment. In fact, in my opinion, the ability to form a picture in my mind of what’s happening on the field has almost disappeared by the need for too many people to have a say. I only want to know which team has the ball and where the ball is on the field, not to hear some would be expert going on about something that’s happened 2 minutes ago. It’s not so bad on the TV because we can see what’s happening, but on the radio we only know what’s happening through the commentator’s description of events, and when 3 or more voices are all gabbling on, it’s not in the least helpful. That would be true of reasonably articulate and neutral pundits, it just gets worse with what we currently have.
