SFM – The Next Steps

As we all know, this site emerged from the ashes of RTC. The wish of the original administrator of the site, one which I wholeheartedly share, was to keep together the wonderful community RTC had built, in terms of both personnel and spirit. There are still many individuals around who were also part of RTC, and regrettably many who are no longer with us. The RTC spirit however, that of a cross-party football site where issues can be discussed in a respectful and insightful manner remains. The “wisdom of the crowd” phenomenon is also with us to perhaps an even greater extent than before, and consequently SFM’s credentials as a formidable alternative to the print media have grown.

In recent times, many contributors have expressed frustration that we are pretty much a talking shop and little else; characterised as “a lot of gum bashing and no teeth”. I think that is fair comment up to a point, but then again our aim – up to now – has been to simply present an alternative view – a view that has increasingly become the fan view as opposed to the industry view (the industry being made up of club officials, players, and press).

In fact the way I see it personally, SFM has evolved to a point where it has become the watchdog (monitor if you will) of an industry which is subject to very little oversight. The Rangers situation will eventually be done with (no laughing at the back please), and like everything else will be consigned to history (albeit more than one). The same self-interest and lack of regard for sporting integrity though will still remain, and the need for oversight will remain also.

Having arrived at those conclusions,  we have two alternatives; the first is to remain as we are (which is not a bad place to be), and the second is that SFM has to expand its role.

In recent weeks, the mods have met to discuss this, and we think that we ought to give the latter option a try. As to how we want to achieve that, and we have come up with a skeleton plan as follows;

1. We need to move into the area of gathering news content as well as commenting on what appears elsewhere;

2. We should act as a cross-club portal to get good fan site content from all clubs to a wider audience;

3. We need to highlight the positives in the game as well as the negatives;

4. We should become an actively campaigning body, aligning with fan groups to lobby for the changes we think important.

In order to achieve these objectives, more time will need to be spent on communication like podcasts, adding news content, expanding membership and building links with other fan groups. Time will also need to be spent  setting up features, attending press conferences etc. Later in the year, one of the mods will have much more time on his hands to help achieve this.

Podcasts, premium content, labour, organisation and all of the above costs money, and ultimately a subscription based model backed by sponsorship seems to be our best way of achieving that. In order to give us a head start, we will in the next few months be putting together a business-plan and a pitch for Crowd Funding investment.

This is not to say that our existing model has been a failure. We have successfully managed to keep ourselves afloat through the ad-hoc generosity of people in our community, although the inability to keep the podcasts going has been a bit frustrating. Finding income streams which are more solid will allow us to respond to events more quickly (for example mounting an ad campaign to respond to some event or other, or buying new equipment), and hopefully achieve all of our objectives – and build a bigger audience base for our message.

Of course a move of this nature will require that, in the interests of transparency, anonymity of SFM will have to be set aside. That will not affect any of our contributors, and our practice of using (sometimes) imaginative names on the blog will remain. However, for crowd funding to be successful, we will require to have a board in place, and there is no hiding place from Companies House. The make up of the board is also crucial, and in addition to consideration of blog members for that role, we will be looking to have respected people from without.

I imagine there may be a consequent subtle effect on moderation policy to take into account.

The reason I have made this post is to keep the community up to speed with events. Although we have decided to move forward to see if we can get support for our business plan, that plan is by no means finished. As I said earlier, the “wisdom of crowds” has made our community unique and given it its credibility. There’s a lot more wisdom out there we hope to tap into before we go ahead with our initiative.

We already had someone in mind for chairman of the new board, but events have conspired tragically to rob us of that – and had the effect of postponing this announcement. However we would like to hear suggestions for suitable outside candidates for board and committee places.

We also want to hear from you if you have a suggestion to be added to our wish list of SFM function above – or even if you think it is a mistake to embark on this course.

This is a very big move for SFM, so we don’t want to rush into anything. We need to listen to what you folks have to say, because if the merging SFM is not considered a better SFM by our community there is very little point in looking to fund it.

Whilst I enjoyed it at the time, I ultimately look back on that season as our ‘The Rangers’ moment – we spent money we didn’t have in a desperate attempt to reach the promised land of the SPL, and fell short. Everything that has happened to us since, the relegations, the admin, the dignity shredding ‘Come and pay us £10 and we’ll consider you’ open trials all stemmed from that season. It took us until this season to actually finally pay off our creditors from that adventure, and in the meantime, the Bully Wee’s name was dragged through the mud.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but I’d have been quite happy for us to have finished mid-table that season and spent within our means. At the very least, it wouldn’t have meant the sight of Bazza, desperately searching for some form of managerial nous for the best part of this season.

Rangers were never relegated throughout their 1873-2012 history. Sevco have not been relegated throughout their 2012-15 history and have been promoted twice.

  3. I made that very point in the comments section, had the Guardian followed their idea correctly they would have had to add Rangers but they worded their Scottish section very carefully to make Scotland continuing top league appearances

  4. Facing a fourth year in the lower divisions, when will The Rangers adjust their self image from “massive club” to something less likely to bring a wry smile to the faces of their haters.

Joe Gillis: You’re Norma Desmond. You used to be in silent pictures. You used to be big.

Norma Desmond: I *am* big. It’s the *pictures* that got small.

  5. Given the polarity of things down Govan way, if there are 500,000,000 fans ( (c) Green Enterprises), does that mean there are 6,819,000,000 haters ? I’ve never heard a term from Ibrox for the indifferent, the undecided or the totally oblivious.

Don’t know what to say about this

    http://www.vanguardbears.co.uk/article.php?i=61&a=vb-admin-statement—fir-park-31st-may

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
A few of my pals fall into the “obsessed” category, and are constantly encouraging me to visit some of the “Rangers” blog-sites to get a sense of how delusional they can be, but I have always resisted the temptation to “point and laugh”.

I do, however, always click on any hyperlinks posted by TSFM contributors, so that I am able to contextualise any subsequent posts on the subject(s) raised.

I found the piece tcup linked to this morning so outrageously lacking in self-awareness that I just had to have a look at a couple of the “Previous Articles” and in doing so I encountered the emotional ‘tale of Big Gordy’ which can be found at

    http://www.vanguardbears.co.uk/article.php?i=59&a=alistair-mccoist-mbe

    It’s a belter!

Without giving too much away, I’ll just say, “I think I know what Big Gordy deserves. Psychiatric evaluation and marriage counselling”

  7. Are RIFC plc directors John Bennett, John Gilligan, Paul Murray, Douglas Park and Company Secretary James Blair at work today at Ibrox?

Has any intrepid journalist thought of doorstepping them on the way in or the way out to ask “What are we going to do now?” or “Is Dave King jetting in to discuss, what are we going to do now?” or “Do any of you have a scoobie what we are going to do now?”

  8. Actually, my apologies to wee Stevie – I do him an injustice – he has obviously learned that if you keep changing things quickly – you only have to change them again.

    http://www.rangersinternationalfootballclub.com/shareholder-centre/business-overview

“Currently the Club is competing in the SPFL Championship, though it is the intention of the Directors and the manager for the Club to return to top level football as soon as possible. The history, facilities and ambition of the Club are such that the Club remains a desirable destination for foreign and domestic players alike. The first team squad is managed by Stuart McCall.

    Updated: 08/04/2015”

  9. So TRFC failed to achieve promotion on sporting merit, and in the absence of any honest mistakes against Motherwell.

The SMSM and Hampden continue to believe that Scottish football will suffer as a result of the continued ‘absence’ of the Govan club in the top league.

But, this is yet another example of how Scottish football governance is incompetent. We know it is corrupt. Now we know it is ‘incompetently corrupt’ !

Regardless of how good/bad TRFC was playing the SPFL should have had a back-up plan, just in case. This should have been – at the least – an option for league reconstruction for 2015/16 season.
[We know the lawyer Doncaster could have used discretion or just ignored the rules around the alleged ‘3 year freeze period’].

The SPFL – so incompetent that they can’t even do corruption properly ! 😯

    And talking of corruption: FIFA.
With all the talk of huge kickbacks and luxurious expenses and travel I have not read one word in the coverage about the fans – and their opinions.

The fans pay for FIFA – and pay for the sponsorship via purchasing the advertised products and paying TV subscriptions etc.

Just like the SFA, FIFA has no time – or formal interaction – with the paying fans.

Fans make the game, but a lack of fans would kill the game.

When will the governing bodies understand and address this basic fact ?

Managerial candidate Mark Warburton has clearly been keeping up to date with events via the MSM myth perpetuation version of news from Ibrox over the last four years. :slamb:

“I am well aware of the tradition and history of the club so I would never be anything other than absolutely respectful of a club of that stature.”

    Full article at
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/32972187
for those interested in the latest big name linked with the opportunity to “Open the Box” and see the size of the King’s Ransom. Unfortunately for him, it would be the company that employs him rather than the “club”.
    ———————-
Warburton is an interesting character, having only come back into football in the last few years after a career in the City. Brentford are a good team with an ambitious owner, but on the few occasions I’ve seen them this season (once live and the others on telly), their play was largely dependent on the form of Alex Pritchard – a talented loanee from Tottenham – through whom much of their attacking play is directed.

Nonetheless, he will be in demand in the Championship down here (and Watford need a manager in the EPL). He may choose to bide his time before committing anywhere.
    ==============================================
Pritchard was the best opposition player seen at NR1 this season. He reminded me of Wessi, when he ran the show for Blackpool in another home defeat. If he can’t get a game at Spurs, he’d be a fantastic addition for any footballing side. He was kicked off the park by a cynical Middlesbrough side in the play-off semi-finals though, so he may need to bulk up a bit to compete with big boys.

I like Warburton a lot, as he comes over as being someone who tells it the way it is, as well as trying to get his team to play decent football.
The Ibrox link came as a shock, but with the likes of Nigel Adkins only just getting back in after six months, he may see a blank canvas in the Scottish Championship as being a project worth pursuing rather than waiting for another Championship job in England. I imagine that Watford will look abroad again, although there are other EPL vacancies further north that require filling.

Given boardroom support, he would do a decent job, but it wouldn’t happen overnight.

They certainly found a novel way to avoid a sticky problem there. The question was, ‘which teams have never been relegated?’ So for Scotland they turned it round to the two teams that have only ever played in the top league. The truth is, and you’d think they’d be proud of it, Rangers FC were never, ever, relegated!

They keep on trying, don’t they.

  12. Just a wee thought.

Is King boxing clever by constantly telling everyone he will be putting up 50% of the required investment?

Rather than asking how much will King invest should the MSM’s attention not be turning to, given the lack of public trading and share issue options at this time, how much are the 3 Bears going to invest.

That is surely the marker for how deep King will go despite all the talk of overall figures between circa £25m and £40m.

Could we have a scenario of Ashley putting in a further £5m and the three bears putting in £5m so that King can say he has put up £10m. Maybe a bit of fan input of say £2.5m and he could be pushed up to £12.5m. Thats gives a total of £25m around the same amount that was burned through very quickly after the IPO.

The question is what would Uncle Mike want for his extra £5m being he seems none to happy about the goings on down Govan way following his original loan. Is this the holistic solution King is seeking?

  13. Apropos the 500 million, I was recently on holiday in “Europe’s last dictatorship” and on no fewer than two occasions had locals spontaneously pipe up with “Glasgow Rangers!” when I told them where I was from. Of course I employed my limited language skills to inform them that Rangers had gone bankrupt three years ago, and there was a new club of that name, but they too were almost bankrupt. Both were surprised but, it has to be said, not unduly concerned.

Rangers have released 14 first team players ahead of a squad overhaul this summer. Clear-out.

Names given for those released are- Simonsen, Robinson, Foster, Faure, McCulloch, Streete, Moshni, Smith, Bigirimana, Hutton, Black, Vuckic, Daly and Boyd.

Three Newcastle loan players included, of course, but a big clearout, all the same.

    ============================

Simple, a higher percentage of retail (100%) for longer (rolling 12/15yrs contract up from 7yrs). My guess is that the second tranche will be Ashley’s last “investment” because there is nothing else to secure against.. If as PMG says they are already paying Ashley interest after defaulting on the first £5mil tranche – he can ask for anything he likes – no one else will go near them. And the three bears will have to secure their “loans” against their love of club and culture. Ashley may soon own everything in practice – if not in name – wih total influence and can pull the plug at any moment he chooses. Oops, an Ashley-sized loophole in the SFA’s governance – institutionally bankrupt.

    ================

holocaust solution more like – King took a damp flannel to a machete fight when he started having a go at Ashley’s men, then Ashley himself. Unless King has £50mil in his back pocket, he’s always been on a loser here. And even if he has and gets rid of Ashley – he will still only own a football club/culture that does not know how to compete on the pitch on a realistic, balanced budget – and has not done so for over twenty years.

  17. Has Neil Patey been asked to provide some insight into the financial implications of the Ibrox club’s failure to achieve promotion to the top division?
Another football finance expert stated earlier in the week that it would cost Celtic £10M, so on a tenner for fiver basis, would that mean £20M just from the failure to resurrect the OF?
Add on the loss in ST sales, lower advertising/sponsorship/SPFL money and it could be as much as £30M.

Come on Neil (Patey, not Doomcaster that is), we’re all desperate to find out. :irony:

Well, calling on all the knowledge I’ve gained at the (metaphorical) feet of Neil Patey, or put another way, a more educated stab in the dark, which is always of more value than anything learned at the feet of Neil Patey, I’d suggest that, should Ashley lend TRFC another bean, Dave King won’t be putting in any money, at all; because Ashley would be insisting on the type of austerity that would mean King, should he remain chairman of the club, wouldn’t live long enough to triumph over Celtic in anything more than the odd game or two. And I don’t think King would hang around to see his beloved ‘Rangers’ humiliated to that extent. For King it’s ‘put Celtic in their rightful place – beneath Rangers – or I’m out of here!’ The 3bears, on the other hand, might well be recognising an alliance with Ashley is a more stable place to be, for TRFC and their loans, than standing with the empty begging bowl in the streets of the City, waiting for the day the King finds the key to his treasury!

  23. I know King proclaimed that his Rangers are one of the Worlds most financially stable clubs under his tenure, but surely even with this level of security they would still be getting the season book renewals out there pronto, unless that is there is something amiss,we should be told.

Celtic’s average will have been affected by the large number of Sunday games at Celtic Park following Europa League games (5 of the 6 group games were followed by a Sunday home game), and an unprecedented lack of Saturday 3pm KOs.

That reduction despite a succesful season should be a warning to those looking at Europa League income as being a part-solution to the money woes at Ibrox. As has been mentioned many times before, the low coefficient clubs will more than likely lose money getting to the EL group stages. Once there, losing a 3pm Saturday home game to a Sunday lunchtime will more than likely produce a below budget crowd.

The Tuesday/Wednesday format of the UCL allows the domestic fixtures to remain unchanged, subject then of course to decimation by the uncaring TV vultures.

  31. For all the negatives, there is always room for humour in the ‘beautiful game’ !
This is a big improvement on the standard team photo of 2 rows of players on the home pitch.

    Blatter to step down.

    SFA please take notice.
    =====================================================
Now that Sepp Blatter has finally unhitched his wagon from the gravy train, the FIFA powerbrokers will be scouring the footiesphere for a suitable replacement.
They will need someone well versed in the machinations of football politics and rule flexibility, whilst at the same time having a reputation as being a world class administrator, an ability to handle criticism with the brassiest of brass necks, and a teflon quality when it comes to avoidance of responsibility for any malfeasance within the organisation.

Please step forward Mr Robert Campbell Ogilvie SFA.

    Beyond parody.

Perhaps the SPFL and SFA should put that on the Ibrox club’s membership pages? Even Neil himself (that’s Doomcaster not Patey) would be proud of that worldie of linguistic sophistry.

  36. Yes, Campbell Ogilvie would be a perfect fit – to carry on the good work laid down by Blatter… 😕

As with the IMF a few years back, a clear, unambiguous signal for change would be to elect a woman.
They do have female heads of state, so why not FIFA ?
[There is one female on the FIFA Executive Committee.]

    What’s going on?
Compliance Officer got this spot on!?
2 match bans accepted without rancour by Motherwell players. Appropriate.
Moshni gets an immediate ban for the violent conduct with a full hearing and interest on the punishment to follow after he has been dragged back and made to explain himself.
Erwin – yellow card for unsporting behavior and a sore chin to remind him for future times that sometimes it is better not to push his luck.

Can’t find anything to complain about there at all. 😯
That and the weekends refereeing that was actually quite acceptable by and large…

Just what do the SFA think they are playing at here?

Has yon FIFA thing put the wind up them d’ye think?

Or are they up to summat!?

  38. Mr Kennedy ,where do you start the real journey, the journey of life and the realisation that comes with it,life is not a rehearsal ,oh yes mistakes will be made along life’s journey ,mistakes that we learn from and learn not to repeat, being able to enjoy friendships and other peoples company without fear or favour, this part of your so called journey back is the chance to realign and stop repeating the same mistakes that is carrying old baggage that ,unless discarded will never free the new Rangers to go forward, like I say, life is not a rehearsal .

    Oops:-

No 9. Won The Now-Defunct Cup Winners Cup

“Credit where credit is due, Celtic won the 1966 European Cup, a magnificent achievement and one the club can rightly crow about, but that competition is still open, meaning Rangers could feasibly still win it. “

  41. https://billmcmurdo.wordpress.com/2015/06/02/the-darkness-deepens/

McMurdo in a sombre mood. But some wise words in there-

The Rangers we see today is not The Rangers of times past. That doesn’t mean it is a new club, although some fear that this is the end game. But it is a club shorn of the very qualities that made it a household name across the globe. A club despised – without honour, dignity and credibility. As my good friend Ninjaman often points out, this is a nightmare of Rangers fans’ own doing. The arrogance of many of those fans did not help. Even after last weeks’ drubbing, many were boasting that Rangers would progress. This would be wonderful if it was genuine confidence or faith. The fact that it was presumption based on a sense of entitlement and privilege made it all the more despicable.

Bill Struth is often quoted by the Rangers fans. Sadly, many interpret his words as a licence to have a superiority complex. The truth is that Struth knew the inescapable rule of football – all achievements and victories must be earned. This ethos is the true foundation of Rangers as a football success story and it has been swapped for a counterfeit “We arra peepel” notion of entitlement and disdain.

  48. Personally, I’m hoping Stewart Regan gets the FIFA gig. He can tell all the other nations they’re toast if England don’t qualify for the World Cup.

  49. What led Mohsni to react like that on Sunday? What was the reason for this assault.
This was not a Derby game. These two clubs have never played each other before. So why the malevolence of the attack. I can’t accept that Mc Call’s speech pre-game was pitched as to elicit such an assault.
Would it be that the spectre that haunts the cavernous cathedral that is Ibrox commanded Mohni to play like a thug, of course not, don’t be stupid he has baggage in this department. Those that signed him knew of this baggage, so why sign a maniac unless you envision a role for him. Thank God he is gone but that should not absolve those that signed him of blame. They knew he he was an attack dog, and are fully responsible for besmirching a fantastic day for Motherwell..

  50. Take away the Mohsni and Warburton squirrels and there is nothing much in the MSM about The Rangers in the past 48 hours – at a time when:

    • There is real doubt about the biggest club in Scotland avoiding administration before the start of the season.

    • One man could call administration before lunch tomorrow – or any other day

    • They don’t have a squad worth the name or a budget to get one.

    • They don’t have a settled manager

    • The Chairmen (both acting and elect) have gone to ground and have uttered not a single word between them on the current malaise.

    • One of their biggest shareholders has effectively accused the board of the plc of not acting in the best interests of all shareholders – see Emergency Gazebo Meeting resolutions.

    • The financial plan the Messiah promised is still being carved into stone and probably involves a miracle or two.

Is that not a bigger story than Mohsni and Warburton?

Does that not raise a ream of questions for anyone with a molecule of curiosity?

Is every man of the MSM too frightened to mention any of this for fear of breaking the “la-la-la-la I can’t hear you” spell?

Is it time to call in the Americans to ask some oafish, clumsy, crass, culturally insensitive questions that show a total ignorance for the subtleties of local societal norms and accepted behaviour within the beautiful game?

Jeez shit, you’re damned right it is bud!

  52. We never heard much about the famous letter from the fans that was to be read out to TRFC players before the motherwell games.Maybe it was to near the bone for some of the players and had a detrimental effect on their performance on the pitch.Or in all the post match hype it could have been forgotten

  53. Maybe yon missive found its way to the wrong dressing room and the Well bois thought OK let’s Really get it up them?

  54. Following the conclusion to the SPFL season, the club can announce the following squad updates for summer 2015.
The following players have been offered extended contracts at the club:
    Lionel Ainsworth
    John Sutton
    Lee Erwin
The following players have been allowed to leave the club following the expiry of their contracts:
    Stuart Carswell
    Simon Ramsden
    Paul Lawson
    Iain Vigurs
    Bob McHugh
    Zaine Francis-Angol
    Fraser Kerr
    Ross Stewart
The following short-term arrivals / loans have also left the club:
    George Long
    Mark O’Brien
    Anthony Straker
    Louis Laing
    Nathan Thomas
    Conor Grant
    Scott McDonald
‘Well boss Ian Baraclough said: “I would first and foremost like to take the time to sincerely thank each and every player who is leaving the club for all their hard work and endeavor.
“Guys such as Bob McHugh, Stuart Carswell and Ross Stewart have been Motherwell players for a significant amount of time and deserve particular recognition for their length of service. Simon Ramsden, Fraser Kerr and Zaine Francis-Angol have been at the football club during an almost unprecedented period of success and played their parts, as did Paul Lawson and Iain Vigurs.
“We wish each and every single player leaving the club all the very best with their future careers. However, I feel we need a freshness in the squad and that’s my role over the summer.
“Some of the lads who arrived during January / February certainly impressed and aided in our league survival, and we would be keen to keep them on. However, we still need to have a conversation with either the individuals or their parent clubs to see what is possible.
“We have or will also offer extensions to Lionel Ainsworth, John Sutton and Lee Erwin for next season. That process has begun and we hope they will stay, but face completion for all three. We will offer them the very best we can though and hope they see themselves fitting into the way we want to play in 2015/16 and beyond.”

  55. So here’s reality in the raw. 3 days after find a brand new team.
Doubt we have 11 senior players registered now.
    COYW
    Maybe others should follow suite.

  56. • There is real doubt about the biggest club in Scotland avoiding administration before the start of the season.

Kenny Misser, really is a twat of a guy, absolute ned. Been saying all week that they wouldn’t be gracious in defeat, just didn’t expect one of their own players to have a meltdown on the pitch. So any ban Mohsni gets I take it that its carried over to any country that is governed by UEFA? not sure how that works!
