Naming the Rose

We spend an inordinate amount of time on this blog arguing about what the re-emergent Rangers should be called. It is a rather circular debate with no way of finding any consensus. The dispute between Rangers (“The Rangerists”) or The Rangers or Sevco (“The Sevconians”) and its claim to be the club that was formed in the 19th century is spurious. Whichever way you look at it, the continuity of the “brand” is undeniable and as long those who wish to keep buying that package are satisfied that the wrapping is authentic – where’s the harm?

The red herring in the argument is that “history” is important. To the average football fan, it is nothing of the kind. As a Celtic fan myself, and a bit of a student of the history of the club, I am constantly dismayed by the Thousand Yard Stare I get from your average Celtic fan who is confronted with the names of people who contributed significantly to the club’s identity. Key figures like Sandy McMahon, Jimmy Delaney, Jimmy McGrory and (God help us) John Thomson rarely elicit recognition.

Modern football fans who live in the instant gratification society of the the WWW and mobile communications may pay lip service to their clubs’ history, but that’s not what gives the modern football fan wears as his badge of honour. That is a commodity often erroneously confused with history – the bragging rights associated with the trophy haul.

The ability to claim that “we have more titles than you” is far more valuable to a supporter than which 19th century attacking centre-back won the Scottish Cup with a last minute header; and the value of said cup wins is heavily weighted in favour of the most recent (save for the honourable exception of the European successes).

The maintenance of that illusion of superiority is crucial if Rangers fans are to believe that their club is still Rangers. Perhaps in time they may even come to fully believe it themselves, but the cataract of column inches devoted to propagating that myth, both from the MSM and from information outlets controlled by Charles Green’s organisation, betrays a lack of total belief by the chief Bear-existentialists. Protesting too much may not be subtle, but that never put off your average fitba’ man either.

The upshot though is this. There is a belief – or at least a hope – amongst Rangerists that the continuity argument holds. They will call the new club Rangers. Fans of other clubs who make up the vast majority of the Sevconian tendency, believe nothing of the kind. They will call it something else.

Many will remind Rangerists that the old club died, and this is factually correct (or at least will be very soon). Rangerists will counter that the Rangers ethos lives on at Ibrox, and despite the worrying overtones (for some) contained in that statement, that is also factually correct.

Rangerists will also point out, as Rangers fans on this blog already have, that the SPL bent over backwards to assist the continuity of the club in order to minimise the financial consequences for Scottish football, and that the SFL too, have agreed that they are the same club.

Why? Simply because Scottish Football thinks it needs to help perpetrate they illusion of continuity to avoid the loss of thousands of paying customers to the game altogether.

So round one has gone to the Rangerists, with the Sevconians pretty much taking an eight-count.

So is the name thing important? I don’t think it is of critical importance. The name in itself doesn’t matter, but to merely agree that everything is as before is to join forces with the MSM, SFA & SPL who have sought to give RFC and their tax theft a pass.

Whatever happens in the future though, the illusion hasn’t worked completely. The Sevconians’ wish to call the new club by a different name was for the purpose of making it synonymous with tax evasion, however the name Rangers now evokes exactly that response. There is now a discernible pause when people mention Rangers. A pause that reflects on the dis-service they did to the country, and to the game of football in Scotland.

Which brings us to the really important point. Throughout this saga rules have been bent. Conflicted individuals, alleged to have been involved in the tax and registration scam and its subsequent cover-up, have remained in positions of authority and power, despite being under a cloud throughout. The media have been complicit, except in rare cases, in allowing the wrong-doing to go unquestioned, actively campaigning for rules not to be applied.

What we have been saying all along is this. Please play the game by the rules, and do not manufacture special cases for the financially powerful.

Call Rangers whatever you wish, but deal with their transgressions appropriately in the spirit of sporting fairness, and within the framework of the existing rules. That is the least – and most – we expect. We don’t ask for much. Just give us back some pride in our sport .

  1. It’s all been a bit shambolic hasn’t it? Whole share issue has been mocked and torn apart in mere hours by the pesky internet bampots! Back of a fag packet stuff from Chuck. He’s outta here ASAP

  2. If they are so undercapitalised or need working capital for cash flow – to the tune of 20m

Why did the admins sell it as a “going concern”?

Or is this a play on words that this was sold as a going “concern”?

  3. The other clubs in the 4th tier of Scottish football are surviving on attendances levels ranging from 300-1000 yet Rangers home games have thus far all been 40K plus attendances, indeed every other Scottish football club bar one gets attendances levels way less than half of what The Rangers are getting.

It will surely take gross financial mismanagement on an epic scale for Rangers to fail to organise their affairs and finances to break even in the SFL 3rd Division ????

  4. Can we expect a statement from Swally shortly to the effect that he’ll be investing “In a heartbeat”?
CG needs the Bears buying into this as it is obvious nobody else is.
His strategy so far appears to be to appeal to them on an emotional rather than a rational level so I’m expecting a little rabble rousing and lowest common denominator nonsense in the run up to the share issue.

Allow me to oblige, by visiting RM on your behalf and nicking their posts:

    BawdeepHK:

The other matter is that if they [CG & backers], waited to offer/sell them, would they not then make more money, as the club would be worth more – ie at the end of the season? That being the case, and the fact they are in it for the money, why are they making moves now?…
    ==============

That’s a great ‘innocent’ question that any proper MSM journalist could put to either CG or Murray.

“FFW’s relationship with Rangers includes being instructed by its new owner Charles Green during his takeover of the club, with Phillips on a team led by sport head Patrick Canno alongside corporate partners David Wilkinson and Amerjit Kalirai.

The firm’s links with Green go back years to an instruction for AIM-listed construction management specialist Formation Group when Green was chairman.”

And who do you think were the NomAd for the Formation Group?

  11. the hard sell has begun (from Rangers web site)

“ALLY McCOIST says one of the key factors for fans to consider about Rangers’ intention to join AIM is that investment in shares will allow for long-term squad strengthening.

The manager had just 42 days this summer in which to piece together a squad for the Third Division campaign before a year-long transfer registration embargo kicked in.
That left Gers having to go with the pool the currently have for this term, a combination of experienced SPL performers and emerging young talents.
After seeing big names such as Steven Davis, Steven Naismith, Allan McGregor and Sone Aluko leave Ibrox in the close season, the group clearly isn’t as strong as it used to be.
But in the long term McCoist has a vision that will see Gers become the powerful force in Scottish football again – and that requires significant funding over a considerable period.
The hope is that being listed on the London Stock Exchange once again will allow Rangers to generate up to £20million in additional finance for the club.
Some of that will be earmarked for player recruitment and McCoist said: “The money will help in the sense we can make improvements to the stadium and bring in new players.
“That’s a big thing because we don’t want to hang about. We want to get back to where we feel we belong.
“There has to be realism about where we are and what has happened to the club but we do have a squad which we feel can get us out of the division.
“We’re not the same team we were a year ago. We’ve lost 28 or 29 players and we’ve got a completely new staff.
“We’ve got some good SPL players in with some younger kids and in SFL3, the immediate target is to get promotion.
“We should hopefully do that – it will be hard work and we know that because we’ve never said for a minute it would be easy.
“We believe we can get out of the division but we’ll have to earn that right and once we do, we want to kick on.
“Our longer-term plan is to reinvest in the club in terms of personnel and new players so that we can return to top flight football in Scotland and European football.”
McCoist grew up supporting Rangers and has been with the club in many capacities, firstly as a player then a coach and currently as manager.
In his role as a shareholder in the club’s new company, he has a desire for the proposed floatation to work – and believes that will motivate potential investors too.
McCoist added: “I want this scheme to be successful. It has to be said that success on the park will result in success for the club’s investors.
“That is very important because we have to have success on both fronts. They feed off each other.
“I know the money that comes in will be reinvested in the club and fingers crossed the club can do well to make for good investment.””

I remember those cold Saturday morning playing for the primary school back in the early 70′s and one day we happened to be playing my dads cousins school team that he ran. My father told me that he had been a great footballer and had played internationally for the Scottish Schools as a child so I was automatically in awe of him. When I complained about the cold weather and the mold master he advised me to rub olive oil in my legs before a game, that would keep me warm and a hit from the ball would be a breeze. That was it, off I went home and got the Olive oil out for the next game. The following Saturday there I was on the frosty ash pitches that used to be in front of the BarL pre M8 motorway and my father killing himself laughing at me all oiled up, stinking and ready for anything. Ten minutes in and I caught the old mold master on the innner thigh, oiling they legs had made not a blind bit of difference, I was greeting my eyes out.
    =======================================================================

Briggsbhoy…I remember those pitches too…it always seems that we remember mouldmasters in the winter…!

  20. Rangers are in the fourth tier, they have at least one promotion and potentially a couple more to negotiate depending on how league reconstruction is configured, and they have a stadium that is perfectly adequate for any and every division of the Scottish Football League.

It will be a further 3 years before they are eligible to play in UEFA Competitions again, they cannot sign players for 14 months even then they generate vastly greater resources than any SFL team they will encounter on their way back to the SPL or whatever the top division is called then.

WHY NOW? Why not 2014 or 2015 when the club will be much closer to being eligible for another attempt to secure a Champions League spot which is still 2-3 years away yet.

What £20M worth of football players and stadium investment do they need now or next year?

Green & McCoist are selling flannel & half truths but i doubt many Gers fans will listen to what we say on here versus Moonbeams the club is promising.

Mr. Whyte, I was just going to ask: how in the world can Mr. Charles get away with claiming that one of the purposes of this rather rushed share issue is squad strengthening? (Of course, the answer has to be some combination of a Scottish sporting media that is either sloppy and/or biased and a demographic that is simultaneously charity-minded and supremacist.)

Forgive my ignorance/laziness, but does anyone know the first date on which T’ Sevco will be able to spend one thin dime on new players?

You can’t be looking properly because the Crow has had a paint job in the past week. They have even a new carpet and recovered the seats, downstairs that is. The toilets alas are still the shitiest in smelliest in the Briggs. Apparently the Old Briggs bar is to become a Wotherspoons which is why I suspect the Crow has gone for a paint job. Best bar service is in the Crow. Quin’s I never enter and haven’t done so for over 5 years or more and I don’t expect to enter it for the next 5. I sometime head into AG’s club.

The Rangers Football Club can sign any players from the close of next summer transfer window ie 1st September 2013 they could sign out of contract players but in terms of the next available transfer window then we are talking January 1st 2014 they can buy, sign, register whomever they so wish.

  24. Ah, Mr. Brown–you have answered my question before I could even type it! Gracias.

Just clicked on the link leading to the application for a T’ Rangers Share Offer prospectus. I walked away (sic) from the computer for a few moments, and came back to find the following message on my screen:

“Your connection to the site has timed out, for secuity reasons we have ended your session.”

    Sorry to veer OT:

In the shadow of Barlinne in the mid-Sixties I scored a lobbed goal at the end of a match we lost 1-9. People cheered though. The greatest feeling in the world it was too – for a wee left back. Therefore just to confirm they are officially saying that Ally is not a shareholder in the ‘club’ but merely in the club’s new company. Therefore The Rangers Football Club Ltd (previously Sevco Scotland Ltd) is a different entity from ‘The Rangers Football Club’. Have we all got that?

Also would anyone in the MSM just like to ask him straight ‘ Alastair can you confirm you are a shareholder?’
How much he has invested (or salary sacrificed) is no-one’s business but his.

However I think we should be told so that we can have confirmation that what is being said is indeed true being there was clear contradictory reports he had a 4.5% stake in the club – sorry the club’s new company.

Had a wee look at FF to see the reaction to the FT piece, aside from the inevitable remarks about the author’s surname, the posters were in some sympathy with its arguments. I may have to revise my guesstimate of Mr Green’s likely take downwards
    ………………………………………………………..
Now its not just words, its actual hard cash to be parted with.
If you take the base being 35k season ticket holders then take away multiple season ticket holders in the one house, most pensioners, minimum wage supporters, unemployed supporters, ones who just wont bother, ones who dont get round to applying, ones who dont(cant) fill in the forms, ones with EVEN HALF A BRAIN, then there is no way on gods earth they will raise 20 million.
If the big investors dont get involved which unlikely as there must be loads of better opportunities with realistic returns then I just cant see even 5million being raised, if it ever gets that far.
I still think it will some kind of private offering to the fans.

  30. LEST WE FORGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If part of the money is to be used to strengthen the squad then what about

    SFL Rule 115.2:-

“A club shall be permitted to register, at any one time, up to a maximum of 22 players, who have reached the age of 21 years on 1st January of the appropriate year. The maximum number of 22 players includes players registered by means of a temporary transfer. Additional players may be registered by a club, however such players must be under 21 years of age on 1st January of the appropriate year.”

On 1 January 2013 I think I am right in saying that 21 players in the current squad will be aged 21 and over, plus the two oldies out on loan. (Also lets not forget Green was still claiming ownership of the Tupe Fives registrations – funny that one has dropped of the radar as well).

Therefore to make room for all this ‘strength’ who is going to go? McCulloch (34), Alexander(34), Kyle(32), Cribari(31). Or will the younger players get punted in favour of a highly paid experienced player in their late 20’s as was the case in the past.

  31. As it’s been a quiet day 😀 , if anyone is looking for something to while away two and a bit hours, ‘The Hill’ is on TCM at 18:45 this evening.

  32. I’m assuming that Ally McCoist stood shoulder to shoulder with Mr Green today when the share issue was launched?

Assuming that Mr Green’s intention is to exit stage left with the money – where would this leave Supper Ally in the eyes of the fans?

I’m assuming that Ally will continue to be manager of the Club irrespective of his performance.

    —————–

Can hardly keep up suddenly. Apropos Formation Group and CG it’s beginning to make some sort of sense, or nonsense. This is from Paul McConville, on the 20th of July:

“Another shock announcement followed on 17 May when Nova announced that Charlie had resigned with immediate effect in order to pursue other business interests had the immediate effect of losing his ONE MILLION share option. Ouch!”

“But days before quitting Nova the jet-setting chairman apparently had his sights on Rangers and a £30 million AIM Flotation which would give him a £3 million pay day making the cheap Nova share issue small fry by then. It’s hard to pin down exactly when Charlie turned blue but in all of these things timing is important as we have seen all through the process including the D&P bidding process.”

  34. First Charles said Alastair had a 4.5% share in the club……..

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19376352

Gers boss McCoist has also bought into the consortium and owns a share of about 4.5%.

Then Alastair says no I don;t……….

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/rangers/9506586/Ally-McCoist-prepares-to-buy-stake-in-Rangers.html

Reports at the weekend suggested the Ibrox boss owned a share of about about 4.5% after buying into Charles Green’s consortium, who purchased the business and assets of Rangers when they were consigned to liquidation in the summer.

McCoist says the reports are premature but admits he is interested in becoming an investor.

He said: “It’s jumped the gun a little bit because, at this moment in time, there is nothing at all that’s been finalised.

“I’d be loathe to say any more until if and when it happens. It’s something I would absolutely be considering.”

Top of McCoist’s priority list at the moment is ensuring he has as strong a squad as possible in place before a 12-month transfer embargo comes into effect on September

Now the website states he has but he himself does not confirm it……..

“In his role as a shareholder in the club’s new company, he has a desire for the proposed floatation to work – and believes that will motivate potential investors too.”

    So…………

Anyone with a microphone care to ask him a very simple question……….

What company do you own shares in?

Apologies I may have got over excited.

I have to correct myslef and say I believe the current squad begins to reach the over 21 quota on 1 Jan 2014 as some guys will only turn 21 next year.

Regardless Ally still only has room for 4 or 5 over 21’s and the squad would only be below the SFL criteria for a few months from the end of the registration embargo and having to dump some personnel by 1Jan 2014.

  36. And now out pops Murray of the BKs……………

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19907314

Ex-Rangers director Paul Murray claims Scottish football power shift
Former Rangers director Paul Murray has claimed that the Ibrox side competing in the Third Division has led to a power shift in Scottish football.

Murray, whose Blue Knights group led an unsuccessful bid to buy the club in the summer, believes the Scottish Premier League is less powerful than before.

And he thinks more power has moved to the Scottish Football League with Rangers as a member club.

“The dynamics of power have changed a bit from the SPL to the SFL,” he said.

“The SFL have now, perversely, got quite a bit of power because they have now got Rangers as one of their member clubs.

And Murray believes that this power shift could lead to structural change in the Scottish game.

“And I think that’s what ultimately might actually lead to some change,” he said.

“Because of the fact you’ve then got two bodies who’ve got one half of the Old Firm in each of the bodies that might also lead to change that we think we need.”

The prospect of an expanded SPL emerged in a package of reforms put to Scottish Football League clubs just two days before their vote on admitting Rangers to the body.

Streamlined governance, a fairer distribution of revenue and play-offs for access to the SPL were also proposed in a bid to sweeten a deal that would see the new Ibrox club granted entry to Division One.

However, SFL clubs chose to admit Rangers to Division Three

They may well be ‘circling the wagons’ but the injuns (TSFM ‘real’ bloggers, genuine football fans, chairmen with honesty …) are closing in fast.

Defiance (which does not square with integrity) will be their undoing.

Reminds me of Custer’s last stand.

Can we expect a statement from Swally shortly to the effect that he’ll be investing “In a heartbeat”?
CG needs the Bears buying into this as it is obvious nobody else is.
His strategy so far appears to be to appeal to them on an emotional rather than a rational level so I’m expecting a little rabble rousing and lowest common denominator nonsense in the run up to the share issue.

..Charles Green or the West African prince who keeps emailing me..?

Apologies for the delay in response.

To quote Connery’s Jimmy Malone in “The Untouchables” – “Who would claim to be that who is not?”

As you carefully point out, the Z has replaced the S in Charles – still not understanding as to why but since I haven’t seen many of your posts on this blog, one could be forgiven for making a distinction between the two monikers.

If you are indeed the Ray Charles of RTC yore and more than a few enlightening posts, then I offer my apologies for any slight incurred.

  45. CG is quoted tonight as saying that there is no need for the share issue to be underwritten because he is confident all the shares will be taken up. If not he says that ‘we’ will purchase any that remain.
He might be in for a bit of a shock like Murrays last failed share issue.

Shows the international interest in the share offer.

Yes – I can see the strategic fit here…

The Prince and the Paupers? 😉

  47. Note the name of the entity – as displayed on the application for interest in the share issue:

We will be in touch in due course with details of how and when you can invest in Rangers Football Club.

Are there any potential problems in using that name or am I over egging things?

    ====================================================================

Briggsbhoy…just passed the Crow half an hour ago…looked the same as always…especially now the Briggs has closed…and Quins has been repainted!

Sadly, I have come across the Daily Rager and the Scottish Sun…and sadly I read the sports pages.

Ye Gods….such absolute churnalism from the presstitute pack!

Ah the old Briggs bar…and Quins…widnae drink in the crow if you paid me!

  49. So it looks like Charlie could be about to prove me wrong, as I have maintained all along that this AIM flotation would never come to pass
However, I haven’t given up yet, as there is still a lot of water to flow under the bridge, and there will be many twists and turns before it happens, if at all

Charlie telling anyone who will listen, mainly the MSM and the Sevcovians, that institutional investors are really quite keen to become involved, I find baffling
These investors look for a decent return, and the one thing you will not get with a Scottish football club is a decent return, so I can’t see them lining up to part with their cash

It’s also laughable to try and place Sevco on the same level as Man Utd, as anyone with half a brain will realise
This is not a done deal yet, and for Charlie to say it doesn’t need underwritten, as any slack will be taken up by himself and his cronies, tells me he is not that confident of attracting the level of investment his bravado and bluster would have us believe

    I await developments with interest

There seem to be lots of people interested in ‘investing’ £10,000. 🙂

    They are genuine, aren’t they?

  51. Haven’t had time to catch up on posts so apologies if this has been extensively commented on.

According to Charlie boy, funds raised through the proposed share issue will be used for

    1) strengthening the player squad
    2) improving the clubs properties and facilities
    3) providing additional working capital

I suspect only one of these is true and it’ll be interesting to see Sevco’s business plan once the “additional working capital” portion (which will be 100% if the new investors are lucky… the original investors surely don’t want their money back already…) of the share issue has been wiped out. They won’t raise anywhere near £20M anyway, history has taught us that much.

They can’t strengthen the squad (adding a few under 18’s won’t strengthen them) and the properties and facilities can’t need much improving if the valuation attributed to them in Rangers FC PLC’s latest filed accounts are anything to go by.

The Sheep formerly known as Bears are about to be fleeced.

    Somebody should warn them.

  52. If your gonna sell a moonbeam…then you have to be prepared to go the whole hog in making it the biggest and bestest moonbeam…

After all if a guy can sell Tower Bridge to a Yank…

  53. And I forgot to say
This is the same Charlie, who assured us several months ago that he was about to unveil 3 billionaire investors, and there would be £30 million banked by the end of July
There must be some rate of burn over in Sevconia, if Charlie needs another £20 million now !

There was a plan, but it went up in smoke when the boards of the SPL, SFA and SFL failed to deliver Division 1.

Mr Green has been frantically tap dancing in mid air, while he tries to McGyver a Plan B. The jury is still out on whether he will succeed or not.

  57. http://www.thefootballlife.co.uk/post/33376601218/sevco-ipo-no-no

New blog specifically on the new Sevco share fiasco.

I was walking home and saw Sky Sports News on a TV in a pub with a thoroughly miserable looking Ally sat next to an ebullient Charles. It struck me how much Ally has gone from being a man with his own opinions (“who are these people”) to seemingly little more than a puppet wheeled out from time to time to encourage the Sevconians to become the Sevconned. Regrettably, he made his own coffin by saying he would not do walking away and has ended up finding out that that coffin made by his own haste to keep fans onside will be what he finally goes away from Ibrox in.

I couldn’t get my old moniker when I had to register to wordpress for some reason.

Generally my posts were pretty rubbish and I was usually wrong, as many old timers will recall.

I too would like to offer some apologies.

First, to the blog in general for diverting attention away from the issues at hand.

    Secondly to Observer.

I got a bee in my bonnet after he asked me to get my brain out of the West of Scotland for five seconds.

That upset me and my replies to him became a bit over-zealous.

I should not have responded as I did as it only served to antagonize the situation.

Hopefully we can all forget what has gone before and move on in an amicable manner.

There is lots to discuss of great substance.

Think Lance Armstrong would want to supply the “grass” 😆

  60. I take it this is Mr Leggat’s red letter day, on 11th October.

    Wow, just wow!

  61. Interesting is it not that when Charlie talks about no debt, he seems to only say no “historical” debt?

  62. With regards to Ally McCoist I just think he does not look well.
Since Walter left (and boy didn’t he get out at the right time) he has been saddled with a Pandora’s Box with that basket case Whyte essentially stealing money off everyone and then doing a runner.
He has gone from being the cheeky chappie to a depressed fat bloke who is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Unfortunately for him the horrors keep climbing out of the box.
The stress really seems to be beginning to tell.
He has committed his personal support to the only show in town knowing that in doing so most will follow and part with their cash. This could be his ultimate undoing.
The real problem for Sevco is that Green is the only show in town. If they don’t back him then I, like most people, think they won’t see the season out and what a shame that will be.
Anyway I can see Ally taking sick leave before to long and this could have a big effect on any share issue.
This whole farce to me is now beginning to unwind and I just wonder if there is going to be enough rope to hang all of the major culprits with when it does fall apart.

  63. Charles to sceptical Randall on Sky, in answer to the question if the 26,000 fans who lost their previous investment would be offered any special deal or discount: What they will have is the chance to be part of the first group to buy shares, along with employees, plus former & current season-ticket holders. (My paraphrase)

So if you got your fingers burnt before, as a special offer, you can be first in line for more of the same?

I tend agree with those who say that this smacks of desperation. There was actually a slip from Charles that the transfer ban was ‘another good thing’, along with the chance to harvest two season ticket sums during this financial year. This really is just about money, isn’t it. But he’s been open about it and admitted as much via a quote on stv today:

“I said on day one I wasn’t coming here because I was the Salvation Army and I came here to make money. I make no apology for that and the reality is that any money I make will be in the form of shares …”.
