Naming the Rose

We spend an inordinate amount of time on this blog arguing about what the re-emergent Rangers should be called. It is a rather circular debate with no way of finding any consensus. The dispute between Rangers (“The Rangerists”) or The Rangers or Sevco (“The Sevconians”) and its claim to be the club that was formed in the 19th century is spurious. Whichever way you look at it, the continuity of the “brand” is undeniable and as long those who wish to keep buying that package are satisfied that the wrapping is authentic – where’s the harm?

The red herring in the argument is that “history” is important. To the average football fan, it is nothing of the kind. As a Celtic fan myself, and a bit of a student of the history of the club, I am constantly dismayed by the Thousand Yard Stare I get from your average Celtic fan who is confronted with the names of people who contributed significantly to the club’s identity. Key figures like Sandy McMahon, Jimmy Delaney, Jimmy McGrory and (God help us) John Thomson rarely elicit recognition.

Modern football fans who live in the instant gratification society of the the WWW and mobile communications may pay lip service to their clubs’ history, but that’s not what gives the modern football fan wears as his badge of honour. That is a commodity often erroneously confused with history – the bragging rights associated with the trophy haul.

The ability to claim that “we have more titles than you” is far more valuable to a supporter than which 19th century attacking centre-back won the Scottish Cup with a last minute header; and the value of said cup wins is heavily weighted in favour of the most recent (save for the honourable exception of the European successes).

The maintenance of that illusion of superiority is crucial if Rangers fans are to believe that their club is still Rangers. Perhaps in time they may even come to fully believe it themselves, but the cataract of column inches devoted to propagating that myth, both from the MSM and from information outlets controlled by Charles Green’s organisation, betrays a lack of total belief by the chief Bear-existentialists. Protesting too much may not be subtle, but that never put off your average fitba’ man either.

The upshot though is this. There is a belief – or at least a hope – amongst Rangerists that the continuity argument holds. They will call the new club Rangers. Fans of other clubs who make up the vast majority of the Sevconian tendency, believe nothing of the kind. They will call it something else.

Many will remind Rangerists that the old club died, and this is factually correct (or at least will be very soon). Rangerists will counter that the Rangers ethos lives on at Ibrox, and despite the worrying overtones (for some) contained in that statement, that is also factually correct.

Rangerists will also point out, as Rangers fans on this blog already have, that the SPL bent over backwards to assist the continuity of the club in order to minimise the financial consequences for Scottish football, and that the SFL too, have agreed that they are the same club.

Why? Simply because Scottish Football thinks it needs to help perpetrate they illusion of continuity to avoid the loss of thousands of paying customers to the game altogether.

So round one has gone to the Rangerists, with the Sevconians pretty much taking an eight-count.

So is the name thing important? I don’t think it is of critical importance. The name in itself doesn’t matter, but to merely agree that everything is as before is to join forces with the MSM, SFA & SPL who have sought to give RFC and their tax theft a pass.

Whatever happens in the future though, the illusion hasn’t worked completely. The Sevconians’ wish to call the new club by a different name was for the purpose of making it synonymous with tax evasion, however the name Rangers now evokes exactly that response. There is now a discernible pause when people mention Rangers. A pause that reflects on the dis-service they did to the country, and to the game of football in Scotland.

Which brings us to the really important point. Throughout this saga rules have been bent. Conflicted individuals, alleged to have been involved in the tax and registration scam and its subsequent cover-up, have remained in positions of authority and power, despite being under a cloud throughout. The media have been complicit, except in rare cases, in allowing the wrong-doing to go unquestioned, actively campaigning for rules not to be applied.

What we have been saying all along is this. Please play the game by the rules, and do not manufacture special cases for the financially powerful.

Call Rangers whatever you wish, but deal with their transgressions appropriately in the spirit of sporting fairness, and within the framework of the existing rules. That is the least – and most – we expect. We don’t ask for much. Just give us back some pride in our sport .

  3. Alex Thomson one of the best pieces of this entire saga, and also, of the whole Rangers story of intimidation and threat’s. The previous post’s have covered it all so well I guess I just wanted to say thank-you Mr Thompson. We know you don’t do it for a love of Celtic or any others, just a good decent journalist which we’re not used to North of Hadrian’s wall. I’m just re-reading it again chuckling to myself I hope you post the threat’s you will no doubt get to show just how bad it is.

Before 1997, Peter Mandelson set up a database of Tory statements, quotes, policies etc, so that they could be rebutted. Given later events, calling the system Excalibur was probably unintended irony, but I digress.

We really need a similiar syatem for the Media and Mr Green’s Rangers

“Mr Green floated the idea of a £2-a-minute phone line for questions to be put to the manager.”

Super Ally doing an 0898 gig. (Hope he keeps his kit on) Jeezo – Is this where it’s come to ?

No wonder Ally is looking disillusioned. I wonder if he had any idea, years ago when he took over from Walter, that this is where he would be today. He’s realised he has tied himself to Green’s coat tails and will sink or swim accordingly. I wonder if he, himself, was sucked into the mess with naive promises? Too late for him now. If it goes belly up, Green can run south, but can Ally? The bears will only see treason by one of there own. I am almost beginning to feel sorry for him. I wonder if he fondly reminisces about his “cheeky chappie” Question of Sport days?
    =====================================================================

To be fair to Alistair he had to stick around because it’s his club and to save it (and his job) he has to work with the likes of Green because all other alternatives have been exhausted.

If I was in his shoes I would probably do the same. But at the same time I would be talking to helpful individuals who know the ins and outs of the financial goings on just to make sure that I don’t tie myself to something I may pay dearly for later in the eyes of angry bears.

    The word “whistleblower” seems appropriate.

“Looking like it will be oversubscribed, 0ver 40,000 registered an interest so far! I wonder if CG will maximise the number of fans with shares by limiting the level of investment for each person? He was confident he could sell the shares twice over, he could be spot on!”

“By asking the fans, the share issue people will have an idea of the scale of interest, and by the look of it so far, the Club looks to be
on track to make £30m. Well done fellow Bears, once again we are proving to be the best supported Club in the World.”

I wonder what the above Mrs Dation, along with Mr Mouse, Mr Duck, Mr Whyte (several applications each, apparently) and numerous others will think of their expression of interest being limited to £500 or under?

Rangers are a perfectly viable business ….

    ==========================

The only thing going against that is the facts.

    £134m debt to creditors.

    £50m bail out by MIH

A ground in neeed of major work.

Rangers could be a viable business, if they accepted what size they are and worked to those budgets. They haven’t for decades and they still aren’t.

They have continually spent money they didn’t have and the new club is doing exactly the same.

Without decent European income Celtic are at best a break even club, and that has taken a lot of hard work and sacrifice to achieve. Rangers are nowhere near celtic’s size (no matter the propaganda we have been aasked to accept for years).

The problem is a difficult one. Without competing every year Rangers will not get the 40,000 fans you speak of. Therefore income will drop, which can lead to less success, and the cycle continues.

Rangers could be a viable business, if they and their fans accepted what size they were.

“Charles Green yesterday: “If you look at the last eight years [Rangers] have spent £100m on players and received £5m back from sales.” Eh?”

    can anyone help him out?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Not sure I can explain any of it to be honest – but wasn’t Murray Park financed by a consortium of investors whose pay back was a generous cut from the product emanating from there. So big money for Hutton and Ferguson transfers (if indeed it was real money) would not all have gone to the club.

I will be looking to buy and then sell to offset the loss made with the last shareload. I will then write to Murray and Whyte and tell them that even with their best efforts, I came out on top.

  11. Quite agree Agrajag, accept the size they are and that they have got no God written right to win all the time at all costs, but I believe this belief is deep rooted within the club. It is their sense of entitlement that was the cause of their downfall, shame is, I don’t think they have learned anything.

    Friday 12th October 2012, 1:01am
    JAMES WATERSON
TROUBLED Scottish football club Rangers yesterday announced plans to raise up to £20m through a listing on London’s Alternative Investment Market as the team’s new owners seek to rebuild the business.

Rangers has endured a disastrous year, with the club – who have won the league a record 54 times – declared insolvent and forced to restart life as a new business in the fourth tier of Scottish football.

However chief executive Charles Green, who bought the old club’s assets in June, told City A.M. that he wanted to act fast to float the business: “When I met the fans for the first time in May, I said that I’d relist it this year. We could float it in one year or two year’s time but it would be a significantly higher price and the entry for the fans then is substantially higher.

“I’d like to get the cash in the bag. I’m 60 next year, I want to get this finished before I finish. The reality is, if Israel bombs Tehran this will not list – it’s nothing to do with whether it’s a good business, or whether Charles Green’s mad, just that someone took off in an aeroplane.

“There’s a window here, there’s an appetite there, institutions said they like it, fans obviously love it.  It’s not like we’ve got a contingent liability, we haven’t got anything to run away from. It is clean, it is perfect and we can get on and do the job.”

Green, who spent yesterday in London selling the plans with Rangers manager Ally McCoist, explained that the club’s enormous and loyal fanbase could power its financial revival. He laid out bold plans to develop land around Ibrox stadium, including a new hotel, tap into new overseas fanbases and extract greater revenue from media and merchandising operations.

But Simon Denham of spread betting firm Capital Spreads, said he had doubts about the float: “With the club looking for £20m in funding, the immediate thought is that this is probably the operating revenue shortfall for this season and that the club will be looking for a similar injection every year until Premier League (or possibly ‘near’ premier) status is regained.”

  14. The hidden story-placing hand of Media House is surely behind this post on reorganising the Game over at Glasnost and a Pair of Strikers :¬)

    Box Seat or Back Seat?

  15. “There’s a window here, there’s an appetite there, institutions said they like it, fans obviously love it.  It’s not like we’ve got a contingent liability, we haven’t got anything to run away from. It is clean, it is perfect and we can get on and do the job.”

That’s a bold statement by Charles given that Lord Nimmo-S is of the opinion that the club still exists and presumably should he find that payments made outside contract have been made he may want to fine them or something.

“The real good thing is the predictability of this. We sold 36,000 season tickets at £320 average. Assuming the manager does his job and gets us promoted [we’ll sell more]. The price will be higher – let’s say we sell 40,000 season tickets next year at £500. I’ve got £20m. Tell me which high street shop can tell you with that predictability the levels of revenue.”

  37. …on the financial benefits of Scottish football:
“If you asked the manager, he’d want to manage in the Premiership. But as a businessman, it doesn’t make sense, because the average Premiership wage bill is 75 per cent of income. And they will never play in Champions League football. [I told some investors two years ago], put £50m into Rangers and you’re guaranteed to play in Europe every year – and it’s the only league in Europe that has that guarantee.”

    🙂 🙂

  38. It happens that I from time to time dip into Roman history ( as do one or two others on this blog).

I have just refreshed my knowledge of the Catiline conspiracy.

In particular, I’ve been reading again Sallust’s description of Catiline.

” ..He was reckless, cunning, devious, and capable of any kind of pretence or dissimulation.

He hankered after after other people’s property… His passions were violent. He had a ready enough tongue but little sense.

His desires were immoderate and always directed to the extravagant, the incredible and what was out of reach….”

I’m trying to remember who in our recent times answers that description, but the little grey cells are struggling.

@Heavidor Yes. That would also partially explain Green’s fury at the SPL’s decision to not provide a red carpet entry for his newco.

  40. The message to the Bears from Malcolm Murray, Paul Murray, CG and Super Sally is that – it may not be 3 years that we have to wait until we are in the top league – the message is that the Peepil will be in SFL1 which will be the top league due to TRFC being a loyal memebr of the only league that wanted it and the SPL will be coming cap in hand to join the SFL1 soon.

Therefore to tsake our rightful place at the top and then rocket on into Europe and a Master Race League, we need your dosh…..

Kind of obvious Paul Murrya is now being asked to support the CG message…….must have got over his anger at D&P and CG quite quickly………wonder why…………:-)

Oh yes – they all have “Rangers” interests at heart……….how could I forget!

    Nothing to do with money……….

I thought the price of STs this season was £236.( with reductions for kids and OAPs). Now he says it’s £320 rising to £500 next season. Only a jump of 112%. No you’re right Charlie, not many high street shops could predict such a rise in revenue – and still stay open.

The Parent Company appears still to be Rfc 2012 P.L.C. which also has all their
Intellectual Property (Trademarks logos etc.) but the Group structure still has it as
part of MIHL…as well as the superstore. Must be a mistake but worth a look to anybody who can work out why it’s still coming up as a Murray Company.
Charles being cavalier with the paperwork again?

I thought RFC 2012 Plc is the OldCo’s new name? Green’s companies are not Plc’s yet

  45. I am disappointed in you accountants, lawyers and businessmen. There is a clear opportunity for Charlie to be guaranteed his £20mill and not cost the poor Sevco supporters a single penny and you have failed to let them into the secret.

As Charlie has promised to buy any unsold shares, Sevco fans simply do not have to buy any and Charlie will buy £20mill worth and as promised £20 mill will go to build the club. He does keep his promises doesn’t he.

    Well spotted, LW.

I personally first noticed it when @stephend_1 tweeted it, so I passed it to TBK, knowing how he enjoys this kind of thing 😉

It’s absolutely mental. That Israel/Tehran quote is one of my favourites so far.

I’ll miss Charles Green when he eventually exits this farce.

  54. If part of the monies raised through the share issue is for working capital was this declared in the financial information provided to the SFA? If so, did the SFA really deem the club to be financially viable enough to issue a license based on such a high risk strategy?

Quite agree Agrajag, accept the size they are and that they have got no God written right to win all the time at all costs, but I believe this belief is deep rooted within the club. It is their sense of entitlement that was the cause of their downfall, shame is, I don’t think they have learned anything.
    =========================================================================

The Bears deepest rooted fears are based on the fact that between 1965 and 1985 they won but THREE League titles in 2 decades. This was with players & managers that won the Cup Winners Cup ie Waddell, Wallace, Greig, Jardine, Stein, McCloy, Mclean, Johnstone, Cooper etc

Then it all changed for them, thanks to Murray, Souness, Smith & The Bank of Scotland they then won SEVENTEEN out of the next 25 competed for including their own 9 in a row however as we all know now it was based on a mountain of debt and unpaid taxes ie other peoples money that eventually brought the downfall and destruction of the club as it was then.

Lloyds Bank managed to stem the losses and forced them to live within their means and trade players to balance the books and they hated them for it but it was the only time for approx 2 years in a quarter century that Rangers had to face financial reality before the Big Tax Case consequences and Craig Whyte’s take-down brought them into an inevitable administration then soon to be liquidation.

Their Supremacist mindset comes from this quarter century of success that was their historical golden era however much it was build on completely unsustainable foundations and finances.
They fear the era’s when they didn’t win things ie when they weren’t burning through a shedload of debt and other peoples money by spending big money on wages and transfer fees and marquee signings (mostly foreigners).

They have spent 25 years operating in this manner so a whole generation of them have become accustomed to this abnormal ‘norm’ so much so that when Lloyds instigated much needed prudence they complained about being hamstrung and they simply hated it.

And yet they continue to generate at least the 2nd biggest income and resources of all the clubs in Scotland by quite a significant distance but they have completely lost the ability to match their spending accordingly except when external creditors forced them too.

That they were still relatively successful in those austere seasons controlled by the Bank seems to have escaped them.

I can imagine the Daily Ranger headline.

Rangers Back In The Money Again.

The honourable Charles Green has told the Daily Ranger that the share issue will be oversubscribed with over 100,000 pledges of interest and rising. Everything has gone better than expected, though we appear to be having some issues with the e-mail address of some of those who declared their loyalty to the club.

I would ask Mr Itchyb Alls, a potential major foreign business investor, to contact me again as his e-mail address itchyballs@scratchandsniff.com appears to not be working at the moment.

  58. I agree with most of the posters on here that have raised the notion that it will only be hard core Rangers fans that will invest. There is not a chance that the likes of a pension fund would see this as good investment. If he had the backers he said he had £20m would have been small change for them and this sort of cash will only resolve current cash flow issues. Every proposal he likely placed before his bankers or his own initial investors with the latter knowing he haw about Rangers has collapsed round about him or there has been a hurdle to overcome. If he isn’t as some suspect a front for getting Ticketus’s money back and he had just been working with a few others in the belief Rangers would be an instant get rich quick pension he must be having daily palputations as he wrong so far. I’m sure Rangers could be a great investment but at the moment he’s bought a goldmine that’s just had a cave in, half his experienced staff he’s had to retain others he had to let go and it’s a long way off before it starts producing returns for investment. If he has another Cave In at the Gold mine!!!!!!

  59. Charles Green has surpassed himself today, his various media outbursts today reminded me of someone who’s taken too much acid and gets carried away with a particular detail in his own imaginary and convoluted story…you know the scene, you start off encouraging the madness and then it goes way too far, the dude’s gone into the stratosphere talking about the possibility of astral projection, time travelling and meeting yourself in a future life and changing history..Its interesting and funny when you’re high, but when you come down you realise the guy was just talking utter pish! and thats about the size of it, Charles Green is the dandy, the celebrated head of the fan club for the tribute act of the century, the greatest show on earth….and when the drugs wear off you realise its just a re-run of a soap opera you never liked the first time round…

Good post. The thing you hear all the time from the hordes is that ” They will be back bigger and stronger than before”. If they do somehow survive the next few months/ years, in my opinion they will always be lagging behind Celtic ( Who I believe have a better business model).
Their cheating days are over and they will be watched closely, just the referees to fix (Smiley face)

  68. There can be a creeping disillusionment of the soul in this sad affair, with its money-grabbers, cheats, and worse. But how touching have the memories of and tributes to Big Jock been this week. It’s cheered me up no end. He will always be a uniquely Celtic man because of the unsurpassed triumphs there. But other clubs were also privileged to have had the great man in charge at various periods and, of course, our national team as well. A true Scottish hero who makes his present-day counterparts, especially those in the Scotland job, appear a very pale shadow. The Wales fixture will always be linked to Jock’s passing so, in the 90-minute interlude from the story of all that’s wrong with Scottish football, I for one will raise a glass to toast that very proper football man.

Chris, by the time Mr Green is finished, a museum might be all that’s left…..

I’m now at the stage of cynicism where I expect this museum idea (not a bad idea at all and I’m surprised there isn’t one already) has already been suggested inside Ibrox and Graham has been told to make the fans think it was their idea before announcing it was going to happen.

Well said Danish. From a time when there were giants in our game. We were privileged indeed to be football fans in those days. I had recently moved to South Wales at the time of the match in 1985 and was there. I can read about the game now and hardly remember a thing except that when I got home the headlines reported Jock’s death, a shock and sadness that stayed with me for a very long time.

Those who have inherited the game would do well to reflect on how they as custodians measure up to some of those who have gone before them.
